Katharine Clancy Obituary

Katharine Welch CLANCY Katharine died at the age of 94 on March 24th. Born to Lillian E. and George Welch on July 7, 1916 in Port Townsend, WA. She was the maternal grand-daughter of Charles Eisenbeis, early pioneer (1858) and first mayor of Port Townsend. She was the widow of John Clancy, M.D., Seattle obstetrician and gynecologist who died in 1995. They were married in 1942 and always lived in Seattle except for Dr. Clancy's navy sea duty from 1943 to 1945. At the age of nine she became the pianist for the senior Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church in Port Townsend, holding the position until nine years later when she left for college. Katharine graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in Music and English Literature. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and a lifetime U. W. Alum. She had been an active guild member of the Washington Park Arboretum, the Music and Art Foundation (Cornish School), and the Children's Hospital. She and Dr. Clancy were season ticket holders to the U.W. President's Piano Concerto, the Seattle Opera and the Repetory Theatre. She thoroughly enjoyed her investment club, an Antique study club, gardening, playing tennis, reading, Chinese painting classes, and daily classical piano playing. She was a former president of the Lakeside Mothers' Club, was on the Board of the Seattle Tennis Club, and at one time sang in the Epiphany Episcopal Church choir. She was a member of the Sunset Club and the Seattle Tennis Club. She predeceases her beloved children Katharine Enkema (Niel), WA; Dr. John Clancy, Jr. (Kathleen), IL; Joseph P. (Nancy), VA; Timothy M. (Gretchen) WA; and Daniel F. (Adele), WA; eight grandsons John F. Clancy (Jennifer), GA; Christopher J. Clancy (Arlene), CA; Peter M. Clancy (Megan), IL; Mark C. Enkema and Matthew C. Enkema, WA; Michael P. Clancy and John M. Clancy, WA; Sean K. Clancy, WA; sister Imogene Cotton of Redmond and great grandsons Will, Jack, Tom and Joseph. She was predeceased by her brother, Joe Welch of Port Townsend who died in 1979, and an infant son who died at birth in 1951. The family is most grateful to her caregivers who provided so much over the final years of her life, Rita Skurski and her husband Jim, Jim Blair and Providence Hospice of Seattle. Private services were held at Bonney-Watson Funeral Home, Broadway, and internment at Calvary Cemetery in a family plot. I never had a chance to meet Her, but knew Her Husband because of surgery I had as a teenager many years ago . He often spoke of Her (I remember because I hoped to have such a Husband one day and did). My thoughts and prayers go to the whole family. Sharon (McFarland) Wood
