Laurence Joseph (Larry) Evoy, 94, passed away peacefully in the company of his family on December 20, 2012, in Tacoma, Washington. He was born in Seattle, Washington on August 16, 1918, to Martin and Mae Harpur Evoy and attended St. Joseph Elementary School, Seattle Preparatory School, Vancouver College in Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle University. He served as business manager at St. Joseph Hospital from 1950 to 1952, administrator of Doctors Hospital from 1952 to 1956, and as CEO and President of Pierce County Medical from 1956 to 1984. He served our country in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. Larry was very involved in the community, serving as a board member of Family Services of Tacoma and Catholic Children's Services. He was also a board member and President of Bellarmine Associates and the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club. He served three terms as President of the Washington Medical Bureau Managers. He was a member of Rotary Club, Elks Club, Tacoma Golf and Country Club, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, and the Serra Club of Tacoma, an organization that fosters vocations to the Catholic priesthood and to religious life and encourages its members to fulfill their own Christian vocations to service.
Larry will be remembered as a devoted family man and caring friend. He touched all he met with his warmth, compassion and Irish wit. He loved a good card game, tennis match, round of golf, or political debate. He loved to cheer on his children and grandchildren in their athletic events and school activities. He was an inspiration and positive influence for all who knew him.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers, Gerard M. Evoy, S.J., John Evoy, S.J., Matthew Evoy, MD, and Robert Evoy, MD. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, to whom he had been married for 64 years, and five children - Kevin Evoy (Mary) of Olympia, Kathleen Casey (Mark) of Spokane, Mary Egan (Joe) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Patricia Evoy (Jim Funfar) of Auburn, and Sheila Mallahan (Jim) of Seattle. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Henry Hellenkamp, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry's life will be celebrated in a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2012, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, North 12th & J Streets, Tacoma, Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Jesuit Senior Fund, Society of Jesus Oregon Province, P.O. Box 86010, Portland, Oregon 97286.
