Laurence Smart Obituary

Laurence SMART Laurence M. Smart, age 61 of Seattle, WA, passed away at home on April 19th, 2011. Larry was born and raised in Seattle, having proudly graduated from Nathan Hale H.S. and the University of Washington School of Landscape Architecture. He went on to become Principal and founding Partner of Atelier PS Landscape Architects. Larry practiced his craft for over 30 years, garnering the utmost respect from his peers and clients alike. His designs were truly works of art. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Jack, and is survived by his 'Girls': the love of his life and wife of 34 years, Valerie, his daughters Serene and Michael and constant companion, his dog, Polly; his mother Mary Anna Smart, his two sisters Lynda and Jackie and their families, all of whom he cherished beyond words. His work will be his legacy, but for all that knew him his heart and wonderful spirit is his greatest gift. "We must try to do something good, something useful, with our lives. If you contribute to other peoples happiness, you will find the true goal, The true meaning of Life." ~Dalai Lama We feel Larry met that Goal... Donations can be made in Larry's name to the University of Washington Dept. of Landscape Architecture Richard Haag endowment scholarship. You can find the site at www.Atelierps.com, under Memorial.

Oh my lord, I just heard the news of Larry and so very sorry and so greatful I was able to know and work with him when we were both young and energetic. I can go on, but you who are his family should be so proud to have had him as a father and spouse. He was a classic man. He also knew I was a history buff and he shared with me his old Seattle heritage of great architecture. Today is a very sad night at our household. Mike Scott

Was a client of Atelier. Met with Larry only a few times but was always struck by how positive he was about most everything. A true gentleman. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

He was my friend. Always good for a hug. I carry the memory of the last one for the rest of my life. I will love him eternal and be here for his girls as long. You left us too soon. Never would have been just fine. Good fishing waters in heaven I would imagine. Save a few keepers for me.

Val, Serene, and Michael,

Your dad/husband was one of the coolest guys ever. Larry was one of my dearest friends. The times we had together I will never forget and will treasure forever. I have so many stories, we laughed and laughed and did stupid things, and man I'm going to miss this guy. He was my brother Bob’s best friend, and through that relationship we became great friends as well. We went to the U-Dub together and Larry was a lifelong Husky. We loved teasing our daughters (Cougs) and shared many a laugh over that. Even though we weren’t able to see each other regularly as life went along, we could always pick right up where we left off. I remember when Larry and Val met and started dating. I said to myself “this works”. And it did their entire life. I love you man. See you in Heaven brother.

Val, Janet and I want to express our sincere condolences to you and the girls. Everyone has a best friend in their high school years and I was blessed that mine was Larry. He was a man with a great big heart, a terrific sense of humor and gifted in some many ways. I will miss him but I am grateful that he was part of my life. Heaven is rejoicing today with Larry's homecoming and I look forward to the day when we meet again.
