Lee Adams Obituary

Lee F. ADAMS, III Lee F. Adams perished in a climbing accident on Mount Rainier on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. The Mount Rainier climbing rangers believe, based on interviews and the plainly visible marks in the snow, that Lee's efforts to stop his rope-team's slide may well have saved the lives of his three fellow climbers, all of whom survived.

In his full life, Lee was always in motion. He brought and applied boundless energy and enthusiasm to his every pursuit, recreational and professional. Lee loved the mountains and was an avid mountaineer and back-country skier. He taught climbing with the Washington Alpine Club for 10 years, taught telemark skiing and served on ski patrols in Washington and California. Lee was well on his way to reaching his goal of summiting the 100 highest peaks in Washington. And, as if these pursuits were not enough, Lee also taught sailing at Seattle's Center for Wooden Boats and was a cyclist and runner with whom few could keep up.

Lee was no less accomplished in his academic and professional pursuits. Lee grew up in South Freeport, Maine, received his
B. A. in Biology from Middlebury College and earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Cornell University. In 1986, he moved out to Seattle and did his post-doctoral training in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington. After working as a Research Scientist with Novo-Nordisk in Davis, California, Lee returned to Seattle in 1997 to accept a position at Icos Corporation, where he became a Senior Scientist. In 2007, Lee joined Spaltudaq (nka Theraclone) as a Principal Scientist and, most recently, worked as a Research Scientist at the Institute for Systems Biology.

Perhaps most of all, Lee was a thoughtful and loyal friend, committed to staying in touch with old friends and gifted at cultivating new friendships. His grin was eager, his wit sharp, his heart genuine and his writing style in imitable. He was as enthusiastic, loyal and dependable as a friend as he was as a climbing partner.

Lee is survived by his mother, Evelyn S. Sawyer, his father, Lee F. Adams, Jr., his brother, Ellis, his sister, Dale, his special friend, Hannah Kettler, and a wide community of friends, all of whom love and miss him dearly.

We became friends while growing up in South Freeport, Maine. Unfortunately I lost touch with him after Jr.High, so it´s great to learn about his achievements and impressive life events. My heart felt sympathy goes out to his mother and his other loved ones .

I worked with Lee at ICOS. He was a well respected scientist! He was a great guy and an inspiration to us all. I can still remember him pulling up to ICOS on his road bike with a smile on his face. He will forever be missed.

Lee lived his life with faith to be the very best he can be as The Almighty gifted him ---with unfailing pursuit of passion and graciousness in being a friend, a scientist, a climber, cyclist, runner and all others, as well as a cook. I think that a person who can do that also believes in resurrection with the Risen Lord. To be comforted that eternal life is His now with His maker where , one day, we join him as well. "There is no greater man than one who lays his life for his friends."

I don't think I have ever met a nicer or more genuinely friendly person in my life. Lee always had a warm smile for anyone he came across and it was my honor to have known and worked with him at ICOS. I wish peace for his family and friends, as he will be truly missed by all.

Oh what a life!
What life!
What a friend!

Evelyn, Dale, Ellis, and Lee, I think of you, and the space that Lee continues to hold in your hearts. His feet, heart, and passion were rooted in a value system deep and enduring. In looking back on the 32+ years I've known him, I can remember nothing but good times with him: skiing (always the side of the trail), diving, hiking (pretty darn quickly, at that), drinking (a discerning beer drinker, he was), talking (deeply), laughing (much and robustly), entertaining kids (with much energy), and playing viciously competitive ping pong games. I don't remember him ever dipping a toe into a venture but that it was immediately followed by full bodily submersion.

I'll both miss him, and know he has become part of who I am, and so can never be too far afield.

Here're some old pictures I dug out.

Lee was wonderful to work with at ICOS and I enjoyed catching up with him since then. He was so busy living life to the fullest. I will always remember him with fond memories of his grin as he enthused about his latest adventure.

I worked with Lee in Davis. He sat across the lab bench from me and would tell me stories about his adventures. And he always made me laugh when he did his exaggerated Mainer accent! It still makes me smile to think about him.

I have very fond memories of Lee from junior high school in Freeport. I'm smiling because I can't seem to think of him by just his first & last name...he was always "Lee F. Adams III". I remember a lot of discussion in Mrs. Allen's class of what the "F" stood for, and weirdly enough I still remember!
He was a great kid...fun, kind to everyone, charming & smart. I regret that I never got to know him as an adult, but from what I have been reading, it sounds like he remained the same great guy through his life.
My condolences.
