Mary Innis CAMPBELL Mary Innis ("Mimi") Campbell, longtime Seattle educator and community volunteer, passed away on June 15, 2008. She was 91. She was born on December 14, 1916, in St. Joseph, Missouri. When she was nine, her family moved to Seattle, where her father later co-founded the law firm currently known as Davis Wright Tremaine. She attended Madrona Elementary and graduated from Garfield High School in 1934. After two years at Scripps College, she completed her undergraduate education at Smith College, where she also earned a Master's degree in mathematics. She began her teaching career on the east coast, teaching at several private college preparatory schools. In 1949 she relocated to Seattle, where she began a 26-year tenure as a math teacher and head of department at The Bush School. In 1952 she married Walter Campbell, a teacher and administrator in the Seattle Public School District. They had four children, whom she raised as a single parent after Walter passed away in 1960. After retiring from teaching, she remained active in the community, volunteering at Catherine Blaine Middle School, at the American Lung Association, and at the First Presbyterian Church of Seattle, where she was a member for 56 years. She also was a devoted grandmother, and had special relationships with each of her grandchildren. She was an inspiration to many. Her positive outlook on life, her strong Christian faith, her unending and wide-ranging intellectual curiosity, her practical and pragmatic nature, her wisdom and humility, her genuine concern for and desire to help others, and her delightful sense of humor made her a joy to know. She made others around her better. Even in the last several years of her life, when physical infirmities made many days challenging, her constant phrase was, "Tomorrow will be better." She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Laura Virginia Moseley, and by her brother, Perry Slade Innis. Survivors include her four children, Walter (Vicki) Campbell; Betsy Campbell; Rob (Cam) Campbell; and Margaret Campbell; Also surviving are her six grandsons, Scott (Sara), Jay, Steve, Todd, Michael, and David; and Meg Fewkes who was like a daughter to her. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 27th, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Seattle, 1013 8th Avenue. Mimi was the best mother-in-law (mother, grandmother...) ever and there will definitely be a void in our family. We were all blessed beyond words to have her in our lives.
She is celebrating with the Lord and all those she was looking forward to seeing in heaven. Love you forever Mimi!
