Nathalie Bell Brown

Obituary Condolences

Nathalie Bell BROWN 1921 - 2007 Nathalie Bell Brown, of Lakewood, Washington, died peacefully on February 1, 2007. Born on May 29, 1921, she was the youngest daughter of Laird and Nathalie Bell of Winnetka, Illinois. She attended North Shore Country Day School, Milton Academy in Massachusetts, and Bryn Mawr College, where she majored in Art History. In 1943, she married Samuel Houston Brown, of Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, when he was an aviation cadet prior to serving in the 9th Air Force in the European theatre. Nathalie served as a Red Cross nurse's aide in several Chicago hospitals while Sam was overseas. After WWII, they moved to Washington State, first to Longview, and then to Lakewood, where they raised their family and became actively involved in their church and community. Nathalie was very involved in local arts organizations, Aloha Club, and Tacoma Weavers' Guild. Nathalie and Sam have been longtime members of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and were founders and lifetime trustees of Charles Wright Academy. She and Sam were awarded honorary Doctorates in Humane Services from the University of Puget Sound. Nathalie was renowned for her singing, spirituality, humor, writing, and her love of people in every walk of life, which was returned abundantly. Nathalie is survived by her husband, Sam; her children: Laird and Corky Brown; Edith Houston Chambers; Margaret and Greg Berger; Samuel F. Brown and Beverly Crockett; Nathalie and Tom Miller; Henry and Debbie Brown; and fifteen grandchildren: Tom, Victoria, and Nathan Brown; Ingrid and Olin Berger; Casey and Graham Brown; Dylan, Cody, Tess, and Mikaila Miller; Jesse, British, Tara, and Reed Brown. A Memorial Eucharist will be held on Friday, February 9, 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary's Church, 10630 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood. A subsequent Memorial in Celebration of Nathalie's Life will be held on March 11, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m., at Charles Wright Academy, University Place. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial gifts be made to St. Mary's Church School or Charles Wright Academy. Our deepest thanks to the excellent staffs of the Weatherly Inn and the Franciscan Hospice, who were such guardian angels during her final days. Arrangements by Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 253-272-1414.
