Paul Winters Obituary

Paul Bergan WINTERS Paul Bergan Winters, son of Henry C. Winters and Mercedes Boyle Winters, died Sunday, January 30, 2011, peacefully at his home in Seattle, WA, with his wife and family at his side after a long battle with cancer. Paul was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 6, 1948, graduated from Good Counsel High School in Silver Spring Maryland in 1966, served 4 years in the Army, and in 1974 graduated with a degree in Sociology from the University of Maryland. Paul moved to Seattle in 1974 and worked as a social worker for the State of Washington until the late 1980s. Paul then opened his first pub, La Boehme, in Phinney Ridge. One of the first pubs in Seattle to serve micro brews, La Boehme developed a loyal neighborhood clientele. In 1996, an outside party surreptitiously acquired La Boehme. Not to be deterred, Paul opened his current bar, The Reading Gaol, named after the Oscar Wilde ballad in 1997. Over the years The Reading Gaol has been a neighborhood place in Ballard, one of the first on the 65th St. strip. His patrons frequent the pub for fine brews, Monday night Trivia, pool, and conversation. Paul, who had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and spirit of fun, loved music, cooking, nice cars, and family and was so much fun to travel with; he was a much loved husband, brother, son and uncle. Paul is survived by his wife, Sandra Meigs and her daughter Evelyn Meigs Feldman; his brother Patrick and his wife Joanne; his sisters Terri Winters Malolepsy and Mary Claire Winters; his nephews and nieces, Paul Malolepsy and his partner Peter Lindstrom; Timothy Winters and his wife, Amanda; Marty Winters; Julia Winters; Jennifer Francois and her husband, Dino Francois; great- nephew, Kylan Francois and great- nieces, Haley and Madison Francois. Some of the most amazing people and times happened to me when I worked for Paul. Between the La Boheme and the Reading Gaol it was almost 11 years of a great work-friend relationship. He created the dynamic where everyone was welcome to enjoy great food and drink. It was the best place to talk or play games. The fun, friendships and camaraderie. The party poker games. Paul seemed to me both shy and witty at the same time. Sometimes his dry quips under his breath would strike me as hysterically funny. Great to talk politics with. Paul I can never thank you enough for hiring me and being my friend. It opened the door to meeting all those wonderful people.....Cheers to you mate! With a 20 ounce pint! Much Love Shelly

I just got this reminder about Paul. As others have said it's hard to believe so much time as passed. Paul was such a cool dude.
I first met him when I returned to Washington state in 1990. The La Boheme was a short 5 blocks from my house ( uphill ). First night I walked in that bar it was snowing and Paul was working. He had great beer and the typical Beer Steins of Bavarian lore. I told him about my time in Bavaria and we both realized we were stationed in the same part of the world, knowing all the same stomping grounds, but 15 years apart. Paul was a Vietnam era veteran and I served in the 80's. From the last days of the La Boheme to the entire run of the Reading Gaol I had the opportunity to get to know this very cool person. As others have said Paul's great gift was bringing people together. He was very smart and his quiz nights in Ballard were a real first at that time. I have met some of the coolest people in the planet at that space and I am both proud and embarrassed that google street view showed my car prominently in the parking lot of the Reading Gaol. Still missing you my friend.

His bar & grill was a progenitor and an anchor of NW 65th's revitalization...a lot of people don't realize that. I grieve for his passing and...will dearly miss him and the era that has just left.

The memories, oh the memories. One of my favorite is the rented bus you provided for us to the Mariner games, great fun, thanks Paul. The retired guys you introducted me to for the imfamous 1-15 pool tournments. And of course the colorful people I've meet that have passed through your establishment doors. R.I.P.

La Boheme was a wonderful place. My 30th birthday and first date with my future wife were celebrated in its welcoming space.

I can think of no higher compliment than Paul's ability to turn a pub into a "local". I shall miss perusing the classic cars with him at the Greenwood Car show. I shall miss his indefatigable stamina while pub-hopping in Ballard or Fremont. I shall miss his culinary skills both at the Gaol and as a guest in his home. And my wife and I shall miss him as a true and generous friend even though he often appeared to be running on a different time schedule! But you knew he'd always turn up eventually...

We didn't know him personally but always enjoyed and visited the RG while we lived nearby in Ballard and since we moved to Greenwood. He will be missed.

I first met Paul in 1982 when my wife and daughter and I visited Seattle on vacation with his sister Terri. When we moved to Seattle in 1988 Paul's family welcomed us and we became like family. Paul brought a lot of people together who have become great friends. Paul you will be sorely missed by us all. RIP my friend.

Thanks Paul for offering a stool, a beer and a word to the emotionally scarred, the physically marred and the chronically underemployed. The Reading Gaol: where you would meet the nicest, wittiest, kindliest gathering of questionables a person could hope to stumble home from. We’ll miss you.

What I will remember best about Paul in addition to his sense of humor is his attention to quality. I still remember the first meal he cooked for our family. His pub food was also excellent. I always trusted his recommendations. He knew what he was talking about and will be missed by us all.

I will miss seeing and talking with Paul. We were fellow carcinoid cancer fighters. I only saw him twice a year at my support group meetings but I was impressed by his positive attitude towards the carcinoid challenge. For him, the pain is gone and the fight is over.

I first met Paul when I came to work at the DSHS Federal Way office. A group of us became friends and did many outside activities. I remember once we went white water rafting, I will never forget, when I fell out of the boat, he almost killed me trying to save me. I haven't seen Paul in years but have fond memories and wish his family my best.
