Robert Gregory SOTNIK 1947 ~ 2011 Robert Gregory fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, February 3, 2011, at his home in Bellevue. His wife, Carol, was by his side. Robert was born May 28, 1947, to Russian immigrant parents Victor and Alichka Sotnik. He grew up in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood, where then-Fort Lawton was his childhood playground. Many years later, Robert became a charter member of the Friends of Discovery Park, which supported the creation of the park from Fort Lawton. Robert graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1965, and from the University of Washington in 1969, where he obtained a degree in social welfare and elementary education. He began his teaching career with the Seattle Public Schools at Coe Elementary, then taught for 24 years at John Rogers Elementary. He retired in 2003, having completed 33 years of teaching. Robert was very proud of his Russian heritage. From an early age, he played in the Seattle Balalaika Orchestra. Later he co-founded the Balalaika Trio, which performed annually at the Northwest Folklife Festival for over 30 years. The Trio was featured weekly at the Kaleenka Restaurant and played at many local events. Robert was an accomplished musician who played the domra, balalaika, banjo, bandura, hammered dulcimer, and guitar. Through his music, Robert developed friendships which lasted more than 50 years. Retirement enabled Robert to pursue a wide variety of interests. He enjoyed billiards, small county fairs, photography, fireworks and the fourth of July, good clothes, the Blue Angels, and sunsets over the Olympic Mountains. Robert loved traveling throughout the Northwest: Whidbey Island, Vancouver, BC, and Moclips were his favorite destinations. Robert was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2008. The disease, however, did not slow him down. His enthusiasm for life kept him traveling, shopping, and making music. He always maintained a positive outlook and genuine gratitude for the gifts of this life. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Carol Hosmer Sotnik; sister, Dorothy (Vernon) Ackels of Port Orchard; uncles, Igor (Lydia) Gladstone of Woodinville and Valentin (Patricia) Gladstone of Camarillo, CA; nieces, Kristi McGee and family, and Kathy Ackels; and many cousins. He also leaves behind many dear friends whose lives he touched throughout the years. A Panikhida (Memorial) Service will be held on Monday, February 7, at 7:00 PM, at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 1714 - 13th Avenue, Seattle. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 8, at 11:00 AM at St. Nicholas. Burial is at Washelli Cemetery, with a reception to follow at St. Nicholas. Memorial gifts may be made to the Restoration Fund for the Russian Orthodox Chapel at Washelli, c/o St. Nicholas Church, or to Group Health Hospice. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Mr. Sotnik was my fourth grade teacher at Coe School in 1973. He was and always will be one of my most favorite teachers that I have ever had the honor of having. He made learning fun. He taught me about loving other people, seeing a silver lining to life, and I remember clearly the day he discovered I came to school with chicken pox. I laughed about that for years. The look on his face was priceless. He truly made learning fun and helped shape me to who I am today. I will miss you Mr. Sotnik and I hope to see you again one day. Much love - Marna (Engel Gatlin

We played golf at Fort Lawton, we explored Perkins Lane,we rode the bus together to Queen Anne, we went to Hootenannies at the Seattle Center and played folk music together, calling ourselves The Lonesome Two. We spoke of these things the day before you passed. We especially spoke of our love for one another and truly that is the greatest gift that we share..... Friends Forever.

I went to John Rogers. I remember every Easter the bird houses would be filled with chicks. And when the dome on the playground was taken down Mr. Sotnik put up a grave stone in its honor. You will be missed.

Mr. Sotnik holds some of my most treasured moments throughout my childhood. Generous, humorous, and wildly inventive I speak for many when I say that I am glad I knew him and would be a different person if I hadn't. God speed sir.

Mr Sotnik was my gym teacher at John Rogers and I can honestly say that I had more memories of his gym class than just about anything else. He was an awesome teacher with a great sense of humor, and everything he had us do in P.E. was always fun. Silent Soak Em, Star Wars, i wish i could remember more. Good times. May he rest in peace :)

We'll never forget the PEEPs at Easter time or the mask @ Halloween at John Rogers! We weren't really sure it was you but we had our suspicions....! You'll be missed. Had no idea how much musical talent - so interesting!

I was lucky to have gone to school with Robert and always enjoyed running into him at the grocery store in Magnolia.
What a cruel thing to have happened to such an exceptional person.

Mr. Sotnik will be greatly missed. He was my gym teacher when I was in Elementary School at John Rogers. I have such fond memories of those days. We used to alternate going to music class one day and gym the next....I always wished it would just be gym every day! Funny thing is, I'm a musician now. Mr. Sotnik was definitely a gem and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

I am so sad to hear this news. I was in Mr. Sotnik's first class of 4th graders at Coe Elementary. He had been our student teacher for the first part of the year; when we found out he would be taking over our class, EVERYONE was absolutely thrilled. He was a gem.
