Rose Lew Obituary

Rose Woo LEW Rose Lew of Mercer Island, Wash ington died peacefully on January 31, 2011. Rose was born in Seattle, Wa. on March 9, 1918, to Charles Gong Jim Woo and Kow Sam (Chew) Woo. Her family had moved to Seattle in the late 1800's from Richmond, Virginia, when her father was five years old. Rose grew up living in the then small Chinese community in the Interna tional District, and attended Bailey Gatzert elementary school and Franklin High School, where she graduated with the class of 1938. In 1943 she married Bong Wing Lew, who preceded her in death. They established their home on Beacon Hill in Seattle, where she lived until moving to Mercer Island in 1986. She was active for a number of years in volunteer social service work for the Chinese community. She will be remembered by those closest to her for her generosity, strength, and unwaivering devotion to her family. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Lew Vogt and son-in-law Don Vogt of Mercer Island, and grandson Peter J.L. Vogt, of San Francisco. Survivors also include her sister Ann Woo Lee of National City, California, a nephew and sever al nieces and their families. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, February 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeview Cemetery, 1554 - 15th Ave. E., Seattle. Arrangements are being handled by the Bonney- Watson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Seattle Chinese Baptist Church, 5801 Beacon Avenue S., Seattle, Wa. 98108-3103 or another charity of choice.
