Samuel Benaroya Obituary

Reverend Samuel BENAROYA 1908-2003 Beloved father, grandfather, great- grandfather and world-renowned Cantor of the Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation in Seattle for 30 years. He was a gentle, modest and religious man with a wonderful sense of humor and a deep commitment to his family and friends. Born in Edirne, Turkey, Reverend Benaroya was first a cantor in his hometown of Edirne, then served as a cantor of the Great Synagogue of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1952, Reverend Benaroya moved his family to Seattle to become the cantor and office administrator of Sephardic Bikur Holim. Reverend Benaroya was also a masterful educator, teaching the traditional Turkish cantorial liturgy to hundreds of young men in Seattle's large Turkish-Jewish community. Reverend Benaroya is survived by his daughter, Judith, of Seattle, his grand- children Simon (Amy) Amiel of Potomac, Maryland, and Sam (Anna) Amiel, of Moscow, Russia. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Sammy and Ori Amiel of Potomac, MD, and Elie and Refael Amiel of Moscow. His beloved wife of 53 years, Lisa Benaroya, passed away in 1994. Memorials may be sent to the Northwest Yeshiva High School, 5017 - 90th Avenue S.E., Mercer Island WA 98040 ; Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation, 6500 52nd Avenue South, Seattle, WA, 98118; or the Caroline Kline Galland Home, 7500 Seward Park Avenue South, Seattle, WA, 98118. Funeral Services to be held on Sunday, November 30th, at 1:00 p.m. at Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation, 6500 52nd Avenue South, Seattle.
