Stewart Allen MACKLIN Stewart Allen Macklin passed away on February 13, 2011 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCareCenter in Wilmington, N.C. Allen was born June 13, 1947, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia, to William Alexander Stewart Macklin and Mary Margaret Macklin (nee, Allen). He is survived by his wife Laura Baxter of Wilmington, NC and his children Christopher Stewart Macklin of Berkeley, California and his daughter Katherine Margaret Macklin of Seattle, WA and his stepdaughter Heath Alexander of Charlotte, NC. He is predeceased by his parents and older sister, Margaret Ann Macklin. Allen grew up in Woolford, Maryland, and Frankfurt, Germany, graduating from Frankfurt American High School in 1965. After pursuing the family career at the U. S. Naval Academy for several years, Allen opted for a different life. He moved to Seattle, WA where he completed B.S. and M.S. degrees in Atmospheric Sciences, and worked at NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory for over 35 years, specializing in Alaskan marine ecosystem research. Allen was an avid water aerobics instructor for more than 20 years with a strong following of dedicated exercisers at several Seattle venues. A member at the Seattle Center for Spiritual Living, Allen volunteered many hours of loving service to the Coming of Age program for young teens. He was very active in his high school alumni association and kept the FAHS classes of 1963-66 in close contact. In his spare time Allen enjoyed hiking, cooking, music and travel with his wife. He is continuing his travels now in what he called the last experiment of life. Living with Merkel cell cancer allowed him to meet the most amazing doctors and health care professionals and he never regretted a minute of his treatments. A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, those that wish to honor Allen may make donations to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation or to the Seattle Center for Spiritual Living. You can also honor his memory by going outside every day, taking a deep breath and just being thankful that you have another day to be nice to people. Allen was my supervisor at NOAA in Seattle for about five years. What a wonderful person he was to work with, and under. He was consistently cheerful and fun, and was a really wise and understanding boss. I was very sad to learn of his passing, because he truly made the world a better place. RIP, SAM.

What a privilege it was to participate in Coming of Age with Allen. He was a wise partner; a wonderful communicator and taught me so much. I have the talking stick that he made for the COA parent circle, the case that Kate crafted and the story Allen wrote about creating it. This beautiful piece of madrona wood was in his hands many times as he spoke from his heart and it will be passed, hand to hand, heart to heart for many years to come. Love on your journey, Allen!

I only knew Allen for a short time, but was impacted by his sweetness and love. He always made me feel like I mattered and was important. I miss his presence of loving service, and smiling face at CSL Seattle. I will keep you in my heart always, and will follow your example of being a loving presence to all I meet.

Dear Allen:
You mattered. Your presence, your essence had meaning. You impacted me and left me with an impression that I integrated into how I walk on this earth. Your smiling soul always exuded onto me whenever I was around you. You reminded me how to look at life and see it as an adventure, and to appreciate the people around you.
I will remember you and keep the memory of your soul alive.

Before he moved east, I had the pleasure of connecting regularly with Allen. He was a gracious and remarkable man. I worked at the Center for Spiritual Living, he was an ever present expression of love, service, and support. With a deep inquisitive mind, we talked often of Life, Health, and his Love of his family and his Life.

Dear Laura, Kate and Chris,
Allen was a shining light in our lives. Even though we did not know him very well, our lives crossed at CSL, View Ridge Pool and Nathan Hale events. Always a smile and positive, warm attitude. We know he shines on in all of the lives he touched. Blessings to each of you as you celebrate his life and grieve his loss. Roberta, Craig, Eric and Julia

Dear Laura and all of Allen's family, I am saddened and surprised to hear of Allen's death and my heart goes out to you. I was just thinking of Allen a few days ago, wondering if he was still teaching our water aerobics class at Aquadive and thinking of all of the wonderful people I met when he brought me on board to share teaching the class with him. He was a very special person and will be missed.

Dear Laura - I just read about Allen's passing in the Seattle Times and wanted to send my condolences to you and the family. You two were great neighbors on 21st Avenue NE and I often enjoyed listening to him whistle while in the yard. He always had a smile and a kind word. Rob and I still have the sand piper statue that you gave us when Taylor was born and it reminds us of you two whenever we see it in our yard. Take comfort in knowing he's off on another journey. Big hugs to you from Team Lang.
