Sydney Jo Schumacher

Sydney Jo Schumacher, beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin, granddaughter, and friend, passed away on April 25, 2015, during the earthquake in Langtang Village, Nepal. Sydney, born 10/20/95, was 19 years old. Before graduating from Garfield High School, in Seattle, in June 2014, she was active on the swim team, and on POST, Garfield's outdoor education club. During her time with POST, Sydney moved from the role of "camper" to "staff," in which she assumed a leadership and mentoring role to many young high school students who were exposed (many, for the first time) to outdoor experiences and opportunities.

Sydney was trekking through the Langtang Valley in Nepal, as part of her gap year travels, which included volunteering on farms in Italy and France, and traveling in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. Sydney always had an adventurous spirit, and exuded enthusiasm and happiness. She loved camping, hiking, and spending time at her family's cabin on Hood Canal. She surrounded herself with a group of amazing and cherished friends. Sydney was artistic and creative, and loved organizing fun activities for friends and family. (We enjoyed a raucous Sydney-organized round of beer pong on our dining room table before eating our holiday dinner last Christmas.) Sydney will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind her mother and father, Diane and Jay; her brothers, Will and Paul; her grandparents, Marcia (George), and Robert (Tamiyo); her aunts and uncles, Sherry and Richard, David and Janet, Ron, and Jeff; cousins, Jenny, Abbey, Carly, and Matt (Kelsey), and many, many friends.

There will be a memorial service at the Garfield High School's Quincy Jones Performing Arts Center, on June 7th at 1:00. This will be followed by a reception in celebration of Sydney's life at the Seattle Tennis Club from 3:00 to 6:00.
