Thorpe M. Kelly Obituary
Thorpe M. Kelly

The family of Dr. Thorpe M. Kelly is sad to report his passing on April 17 of congestive heart failure. The family is grateful to the medical community that has faithfully treated him into an improbable old age.

He was born on 8/7/30 in Brooklyn, NY to educators Dr. Edward Manuel Kelly and Marion Sheehan Kelly. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. After his internship, he served as a Naval doctor in Sasebo, Japan during the Korean War and as he touched port at Pier 91, he found Seattle to be a place where he would eventually settle.

He married Lucinda Bucher Young on 6/3/61 in New York City and afterword they travelled the European continent for four months. Next, he established practice in Ballard where he was a beloved practitioner of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He delivered over 10,000 babies during his 40 years of practice.

A man of strong opinions, Dr. Kelly was a driving force behind the founding of Physicians Insurance and went on to serve on the company's board for many years. The company is now the largest provider of medical malpractice insurance in Washington State. Dissatisfaction with his long-term bank caused him to join with a group of Ballard business leaders to form Viking Community Bank where he served as Chairman of the Board for 15 years. Under his leadership, the bank grew to seven branches.

A family man first and foremost, he loved taking his family hiking and camping. He spent extensive time in Alaska hunting and fishing and participated in various aspects of the commercial fishing industry there. He was a scoutmaster and had several 50 mile hikes to his credit. He was always active participant is his children's sporting activities and coordinated extensive trips with his family.

He was the loving and much loved husband of Lucinda, Father of Thorpe M. Kelly Jr. ("Chip") (Julie) and Lisa Lindstrom (Joe) of Seattle, and Bruce (Sheryl) of Auckland NZ; Grandfather of Hale, Molly, Bryce, Anna and Curtis. His absence will be sorely felt.

A celebration of Dr. Kelly's life will be held May 4th at 1pm at University Presbyterian Church, 4540 15th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105. Parking information at www.upc.org/parking. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Thorpe M Kelly Ballard Family Childbirth Center at the Swedish Medical Foundation.
