Dr. VK Bhat

Dr. VK Bhat was born in India to late K. Narayana Bhat and late Devaki Amma, a humble and respected Hindu Brahmin family on July 26, 1933.

He was a brilliant student of his time and graduated with a first rank and gold medal in 1957 from Presidency College, Madras University, India.

He obtained his Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1962. He met his future wife, Dr. Clarita Bhat, while pursuing post-doctoral work at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

He established B&C Laboratories Inc. in Mukilteo, WA, for Pharma-ceutical Chemistry Manu-facturing and managed it until his retirement in 2006. He was active in the Puget Sound Section of the American Chemical Society, and also served as Local Coordinator for the AARP Tax-Aide program.

His favorite hobby was to grow organic vegetables in his Mukilteo property and to share with friends and local food banks.

Dr. VK Bhat was a dedicated, beloved father and is survived by his wife of 45 year, Clarita Bhat, two daughters, S. Devi Bhat Visone, a Biochemist in Seattle, WA, and Dr. Tara Bhat Karamlou, a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon at UCSF, California, along with their respective spouses, Dr. Anthony Visone and Dr. Kasra Karamlou and his adorable grandchildren: Nima, Kamran, and Lourdes Karamlou. He is survived by by two sisters, Laxmi and Shankari Bhat and one brother (Subrahmanya Bhat), who live in India.

He loved and was loved by his extended family members both in US and India. His moral and financial support allowed many to obtain a college education. He will be greatly missed by many dear friends in the greater Seattle area and across the US.

A three-day funeral service was held from 12/31 -1/2, as a mark of respect for Dr. VK Bhat by his loving family in India, per his Hindu Brahmin family tradition. A memorial celebration will be planned in the near future.
