William McCafferty Obituary

William H. McCafferty

W7UZB

William H. McCafferty passed away on June 5, 2012 at home after spending the day doing the things he loved. Bill was born May 10, 1938 to Evelyn and Erwin McCafferty in Seattle and grew up in the Crown Hill area of Seattle. After graduating from Ballard High School, class of 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Ina North. They raised their five children in the Ballard community where he was involved with many family and community events.

In 1964 Bill was hired by the Northern Pacific railroad which eventually became the Burlington Northern. Bill loved working for the railroad and has shared many stories over the years of his time there as well as train trips he has taken.

After the passing of his wife of 49 years in 2007, Bill chose to join the Washington Oakes retirement community in Everett. For the past five years he has enjoyed the people, activities, events and staff members as well as time with his family. Some of his favorite adventures have been going horseback riding, train trips to Wenatchee, exploring the corners of Snohomish County by bus and sampling fish and chips from nearly every place that sells them.

Survived by his five children William, Peter(Nancy), Lannon (Arne), Tricia(Stephanie) and James (Cara) as well as his mother-in-law, 2 sisters-in-law, eight grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

I met Bill through amateur radio. My call sign is KB7AIL. I came to Bill's house a few times to talk radio, fiddle with his radio gear and to talk about the railroad. He was a friendly guy and I enjoyed knowing him. In morse code, the sign for 'finishing work' is SK and the sign for good luck is 73 so to Bill, W7UZB, SK 73

My deepest condolences to the McCafferty family. I grew up in the Crown Hill Area of Seattle and was a classmate of Bill at Crown Hill, James Monroe and Ballard High. I was sadden to read of his death.

I first met Bill while taking care of his wife in Mulilteo. When she passed and he moved to Washington Oaks, we realized we were neighbors. I lived around the corner from him. He stopped by frequently and we would sit out on the patio listening to his stories about his family, which meant the world to him, and about his railroad days.He will missed and thought of always.
