Winlock Miller Obituary

Winlock "Lock" Miller

Winlock Miller, known affection-ately by family and friends as "Lock," died on October 1, 2015. He was born on December 5, 1950 and was the older son of Pendleton and Elisabeth Miller. He was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Carey Miller. His survivors include three cousins (Christie Douglass, Katherine Carey and Elisabeth Carey) and five nephews and nieces (Michael Miller, Steven Miller, Jason Miller, Emily Miller, and Elizabeth Miller).

Lock attended Phillips Academy, a private boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from the University of Rochester. While still in school, he spent several summers as an intern on the Juneau Ice Field conducting research under the auspices of the Foundation for Glacier and Environmental Research. He continued his affiliation with that organization, serving for many years as a board member and treasurer.

Lock was an enthusiast for outdoor sports and became an accomplished skier and mountain climber. This interest led him to found Marmot Mountain Works, a company that specialized in clothing and equipment for mountaineering and skiing, and to create a guide service for kayaking. He saw the development of innovative apparel and equipment and was recognized for his expertise in these items.

Upon her death, his mother created two charitable organizations. One was the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden Trust, which operates a garden renown for growing a large number of unusual species and for disseminating information about plants particularly suited to the Pacific Northwest. The other was the Pendleton and Elisabeth Miller Charitable Foundation, which makes grants to numerous area charities concerned with horticulture, public parks, education, and northwest history. Lock served as president of both of these organizations from the time of their funding until his final illness.

A public memorial service, celebrating Lock's life, will be held in the Florence Henry Memorial Chapel in the Highlands on November 7th at 1:00pm. Following the memorial service, all attendees are invited to a reception at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church at 722 N. 145th Street in Shoreline, Washington.

Any memorial gifts should be made payable to the "Pendleton and Elisabeth Miller Charitable Foundation" and sent to PO Box 77377; Seattle, WA 98177.

Lock was a gentleman of gentlemen. He lived life by a code imprinted upon him by his family and his up bringing. Lock was honest, elusive, upfront, indirect, intense, private, loyal, warm, caring, annoying, outspoken, and a father figure to many including myself. His impact on my life and dozens of Marmots is a legacy he leaves for a lifetime. He is missed greatly and will never be forgotten!

Lock was a special person, he hired me in 2007 to help rethink and implement a new apple platform for his stores, and in the 2 years that I worked with Lock, was was exceptionally thoughtful, caring, although he had few words, he was more than willing to show his feelings and if you were his friend, you knew that he cared about you.

He will be dearly missed

Lock was key in my life ..... I never would have met my husband if he had not rescued our company financially in the late 80's. This changed my life forever and that of my daughters who followed me to Calif. from Colo. Later in their young lives...... Connections change all....
I am happy to have been able to say " thank you" before his passing. Safe journey Lock and blessings. You are in our prayers

Referencing Thomas Markus' shoe story....
Those "sentimental shoes" are likely residing with their like kind on the left side, top shelf, master bedroom closet in Lock's Lagoon Point home...

"Lock" you were the admirable individual that gave so much to the cause and there were many. Never have I had a friend that cared about the outdoors and those that walked the earth as you. You and I had a mission "Lock" to create a business that would serve the "rescue world" and I will never forget your commitment to that cause. Because of that bond you were rthe foundation for many new innovations that now serve our responders. You were never selfish to your customers; you always took care of those that fed you. Those close to you and those that wore the results of your ambitions cannot overlook your contributions over the years to the Outdoor Retail Industry. You left this world to soon and the world around you will change but you got to see and be part of many of them. I am sorry to see you go even if we weren't close; I will never forget your devotion and your dedications to those that worked with and for you.
I remember one day at OR when you flagged me down and wanted me to go across the street to the mall to get you a new pair of shoes since yours blew-out. Blew-out was not the word for that right shoe, fore it had seen many a days on your feet and had traveled many a roads. Instead, a thought came to mind so we marched over to the Merrell booth and I approached our rep and asked him if he could take care of Lock's dilemma. In less than 5 minutes Lock had loaded up his old Hush Puppies in his pack (he said they were sentimental) and was now back in cruise mode to an already late meeting.

Thank you Merrell for getting Lock down the road these past years, I'm sure he got his worth out of them Lord! I ask that you take care of this man fore he has taken care of many. Blessed be to you Lock and may you leave many tracks in heaven.

I am stunned. Lock and JIRP were synonymous. His love for JIRP and commitment to FGER were exceeded only by Mal and Joan. Those who knew Lock and worked with him to advance the JIRP legacy will forever be indebted to his memory for his unflagging passion and faithful enthusiasm to see JIRP survive through the darkest hours. No one did more to guide JIRP through some the most challenging and difficult times, since Mal and Joan's passing and for many years prior. To say he will be missed is an inadequate understatement. He leaves a conspicuous void.
