George Grattan FLOOD Our loving father and husband, George Grattan Flood, passed away peacefully Monday, July 5, after battling cancer for the past two years. George was a devoted family man whose children and grandchildren flocked around him to benefit from his love, advice and humor. Next to his family and his religion, George was dedicated to the United States Marine Corps in which he served for 31 years. He was born in Seattle on April 9, 1927, attended Seattle Prep, then graduated in 1949 from Seattle University where he was a member of the basketball team. He also attended UW Law School 1949 / 1950. George and Phyllismary Young began their 61 years of marriage in 1949 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Seattle. He continued to serve in Marine Corps Reserves and after 34 years he retired to the rank of Full Colonel. George raised a family and worked in the insurance business in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. He enjoyed 27 rewarding years with PEMCO Insurance retiring in 2000. Since retirement he has been an active volunteer with the Bellevue Police Dept. George was involved in many community and military organizations. He held leadership positions with American Legion Post #1, the American Legion Foundation, USMC Reserve Officers Association, Marine Corps Council Northwest, Seattle U Alumni Association, the Knights of Columbus, Providence Mount St. Vincent, and church organizations supporting St. Mathew and St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic churches. Flood family,
I'm so proud that I got to know George through the years. He shared his strong business sense, philantrophy, faith and time with Providence Mount St. Vincent and Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation. He was a role model for me and others. I appreciated his strong commitment and interest in helping vulerable aging adults.

I'm sorry I was unable to attending the service. I was out of town.
Gratefully and fond memories

Phyllis and family --
I'm saddened by George's passing, and sorry we were out of town on vacation for his memorial. I was fortunate to work with and for George at PEMCO for many years. He was a man of faith, integrity, conviction, wit, and I believe he had a very kind -- dare I say "soft" -- side that he often concealed with a gruff exterior. And of course, he had a great sense of humor.

As proud as he was of his beloved USMC and Seattle U teams, it was obvious to his co-workers that the true joy of his life was you, the kids, the grandkids, and yes, even that rascal Pat, his nephew and our former co-worker. :-)

Stanley O. McNaughton used to say that PEMCO was "built with many hands," and that our founders left their mark all over the complex. George's were among the strongest hands, and he helped shape our company's fine character and culture. For those who worked with George, his imprint endures.

Mrs. Flood and family,
I feel blessed to have known George for the past 33 years. He has provided continuing inspiration to me throughout my insurance career. Watching George, I learned that a leader can set high expectations for his team while compassionately focusing on the needs of our customers. Whenever I would see him at a PEMCO event, he offered a smile, support and encouragement. He passed on the torch of PEMCO culture and tradition to new generations of employees and agents. He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the wonderful Flood family.

Phyllis, Roger & I were both sadden to read about George's passing. I know you and your family have alot of fond memories I'm sure, but, thinking back on the fun times we had up at Lake Ki during the summers growing up & the seafair races at the lake, & the one time, when my dad would run his model hydroplane on a tether that got off it's line an headed right for George who was smimming in a tube, between the two docks,& when he went to get out of the hydros way, the tube, stuck to his buttocks as he rapidly swam for our dock. They were the best. George was a very kind, helpful, loving man. You and your family are in our thoughts & prayers. Say Hi to your kids. Come visit us at the lake anytime. God bless. Sincerely, Roger & Patti (Kathan) Johnson

I had the pleasure of knowing the Colonel for 20 years while working at Pemco. As a fellow Marine, Colonel Flood and I talked often about the Corps. He was a wonderful leader, an outstanding Marine and a great man. He will be missed by so many people as he was loved by so many people.
Semper Fi, Colonel and thank you for so many many things.

I had the pleasure of working with George for many years at PEMCO. George was a repected leader and mentor. He would tell me what he wanted and then empowered me to get it done with no red tape. George would always make time for conversation and could put a humorous twist to most situations which I always enjoyed. He was simply entertaining to be around. George motivated others to do their best by example and because you knew your efforts were appreciated.

George was a very special friend and a professional role model for me. Thank you God for giving me the honor to have George in my life. God Bless George, his family and his friends.

Phyllismary and family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy and heartfelt thoughts. Working alongside George for many years at Pemco was an honor. He came to my father's funeral in Oak Harbor even though he had never met him. I appreciated that so much. Gayle Glass
