John H. Smith

Age 94, of Mason Lake, WA, beloved husband, father, grand-father and great grandfather, died February 17, 2017. Born in Brighton, Alabama on August 28, 1922 to John H. and Lucille Perry Smith, and raised in West Blocton, AL along with his brothers Perry, Edwin and sister Frances (Mendelson).

John is survived by four of his five children, Paula (Hank) Schmidt of Bainbridge Island, Rita (Gary) Marstrom of Olympia and sons Walt (Mary) Smith of Seattle and York (Peggy) Smith of Ketchikan, AK, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his beloved wife Frances in 2004 and son Glenn in 2001.

In 1943, while on furlough from the US Army, John married the love of his life, Frances York in Birmingham, AL. In 1952, they moved to Seattle, WA and raised 5 children in their Ballard home. Years were filled with square dancing, camping trips, fishing, crabbing, hunting and Sunday drives. He was partner of Industrial Saws for decades, where he taught his trade to his young son Walt. After retiring in 1986 they moved to their retirement home on Mason Lake. Their Party Barge was the first pontoon boat on the Lake where they enjoyed fishing and cruises. Their days were filled with day trips, gardening, dinner parties, travelling the US and being with friends and family. He will always be remembered by his incredible sense of humor, quick wit and generosity.
