John Van Horne Obituary

John R. VAN HORNE Age 85, architect, artist, mathematician and scholar, died April 26, 2003. He was born in New York City April 19, 1918, growing up on Long Island. He attended Andover prep school, Harvard University, and graduated in architecture from New York University. He joined Gibbs & Cox, marine architects, working on the design of arctic icebreakers. During WWII he served in the Seabees in the Pacific. After the war he worked for George Nemeny and Antonin Raymond in New York. In 1947 he married Audrey Jupp. They moved to Seattle in 1948 where he worked for several architectural firms including Paul Thiry, Bassetti & Morse and Hovind, Hawthorne & Smith. In 1956 John established Van Horne & Van Horne Architects with his wife, Audrey. They were commissioned to design the Hiroshima Exhibit for the Seattle World's Fair in 1962 and also worked on designs associated with the Science Center and the King Dome. Many people consider his work classical contemporary architecture. After his retirement in 1993, the firm has continued to provide services to a growing group of clients in the Puget Sound area. John was a scholar who enjoyed classes at the UW in Painting, computer science, mathematics and writing. He loved the arts, boating and the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; three daughters, Susan Van Horne, Jill Fitting, Francine Dunnigan; two sons, Garret and Peter Van Horne, and seven grandchildren. Remembrances may be made to Pottery Northwest, 226 1st Ave. N., Seattle, 98109.
