W. Calvin Obituary

W. Daniel CALVIN Dan was born November 5, 1932, in Seattle and died at home September 25, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. He lived most of his adult life in the same home in Fauntleroy, where he grew up as a child. He graduated from West Seattle High School in 1950, and Hiram College in Ohio in 1954, where he met Mary Ellen Barnett. They were married in 1954. He graduated from the University of Washington's School of Architecture in 1960, and practiced architecture throughout his career until cancer forced him to retire in 2001. He was well-known for the comfortable and understated Northwest style homes that he designed. Dan was deeply committed to his family and to his neighborhood, and volunteered many hours of his time to local charities and clubs. He was happiest puttering about on the beach in front of his house as well as hiking and climbing in the mountains. Dan is sorely missed by his wife of 49 years, Mary, children Jude (Carl) Mundt, Kim (David) Phillips, Chuck (Julie) Calvin, Doug Calvin, and Annie (Rick) Kendall, nine grandchildren and by his three brothers Charles (Alice), Warren (Joann) and David (Renee). Services will be held at the Fauntleroy Church UCC, 9260 California Avenue S.W. on October 20, 2003 at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the West Seattle Rotary Club, the Kenney Home or to the Swedish Cancer Institute.

Dan was one of the very finest people I have ever known. It was my great privilege to have been his classmate and friend. It is a smaller, lonelier world today, but we thank the Lord for his works and his continuing family.

Dear Mary, Dave, and other family members: Sally and I have enjoyed being counted as your friends for so many years. My fond memories of Dan go back to when he wore dirty corduroy pants to West Seattle High School (along with many other boys) becuase he had been working on his Hot Rod car. His important inputs to The Kenney Retirement Home over the past 25 years as a Board of Trustees member have been invaluable to the continued success of that organization. Thank you all for sharing him with us for so many years. With our Christian Love, Sid & Sally Porter
