Obituary Condolences

Mary V. McCAFFREY Age 99 ~ On Saturday 3 February 2012 Mary McCaffrey of Arlington, Virginia passed on of natural causes to join her deceased husband LTG (USA Ret) William McCaffrey who had precededher in death by five years. Her son General (USA Ret) Barry McCaffrey and daughter-in-law Jill of Seattle were at her side as she peacefully left this life. She is survived by a sister Ann Higgins (widow of MG (USA Ret) Walter Higgins) of Hilton Head, NC, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Beloved granddaughters Tara Larson of Seattle and her two sons- and Amy McKinney of Yakima and her son and daughter will attend their grandmother's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. Grandson Colonel Sean McCaffrey currently serving in the US Army in Afghanistan will have his wife Debbie and their two sons attend. Mother came from a strong Irish Catholic family in Taunton, Mass. Her parents Patrick and Della Curtin put all four of their children, plus an adopted boy, through college during the middle of the Great Depression. One brother served as a career naval officer beginning in WWII and the other brother as a career US Air Force officer. Mary McCaffrey' father was a highly decorated fireman in the Taunton Fire Department. She graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1934 and then was certified as a librarian at the Simmons School of Library Science. She was very proud to work as a librarian periodically throughout her life as an Army Wife. Mother was married in June 1939 following dad's graduation from West Point. She served with Dad loyally to her family and the US Army for 37 years of military life that included Dad's seven years of combat deployments to WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Mary McCaffrey was an accomplished and educated woman of great integrity and strength of character. She now has returned to the Lord and the embrace of her lifelong love Bill McCaffrey. Visitation will be at Murphy's Funeral Home (4510 Wilson Blvd Arlington, VA) from 2:00-4:00 PM Thursday 9 Feb. Funeral services will be at Ft Myer, Virginia - Memorial Chapel at 1045hrs Friday 10 February - followed by interment with her late husband in Arlington National cemetery.
