Harold "Hal" James Smith

Born February 15, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side after an inspiring and exhaustive battle with cancer on June 2, 2012.

Loving father of Dann (Sydne) Mead Smith, and Debra (Bob) Smith-Hicks; proud grandfather of Catherine and Sarah Mead-Smith. Also survived by a wonderful and supportive extended family and many cherished friends. Preceded in death in 2007, by Sheila, his loving wife of 41 years.

He was raised in Brooklyn NY and graduated from Pace College. He served in the Army in Europe in the 1950s. He met the love of his life at a political convention and they were married on August 27, 1966 in Brooklyn. He fell in love with Seattle when he visited for the world's fair. They moved to Seattle in 1967 where they raised their two children. Their travels and adventures continued through the years. He worked at Rainier Brewing Company and then Meyer's Distributing for many years as an office manager. He volunteered on many parish committees at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church through the years as well as coaching, overseeing the altar servers and co-founding the Church's Young Married's group with Sheila and other parishioners. He was vigorously involved in politics for several decades. He fulfilled a lifelong dream to teach when he began volunteering as a reading tutor at Hawthorne Elementary after his retirement in the mid-1990's. He also volunteered at Children's Hospital running their coffee cart. For the last 5 years, he served as a reading tutor at Our Lady of the Lake School, where he was beloved by his students and they deeply enriched his life.

Recitation of the Rosary will be held Friday, June 8th at 7 PM and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 9th at 10 AM; BOTH at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 8900 35th Ave NE, Seattle, 98115.
