Fred Anthony Jens Benson Obituary
Fred Anthony Jens Benson

(1926 ~ 2012)

Fred Anthony Jens Benson was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, on June 10, 1926, to Chris and Mary Jane (Morris) Benson. He passed away peacefully on October 19, 2012. He and his family emigrated to the U.S. in 1937, and lived in the Highline area until they moved to Kent in 1944.

Through the Boy Scouts he became an avid outdoorsman, where he developed his life-long interests in hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 45th Infantry Division, 180th Regiment, Company F. During the Battle of the Rhineland, on March 18, 1945, he was badly wounded and received the Purple Heart. He proudly earned his U.S. citizenship by serving his country.

After the war, Fred became a journeyman cabinet-maker. Highly skilled and widely respected, he worked on many of the large banks and attorneys' offices in Seattle and Anchorage.

In retirement, gardening and travel were his favorite pastimes.

He is survived by Eleanor, his wife of 64 years; daughter, Linda Baarslag-Benson (Ross); son Gordon Benson (Darlene); grandchildren, Melody Nordstrom (Jesse), Megan, and Mallory Benson, David Baarslag-Benson; and brother Jim (Norma).
