Laurie Ann Poulson Obituary
Laurie Ann Poulson

Laurie Ann Poulson was born on July 4th, 1956. She was a thinker, fascinated by people and she loved to travel. She excelled in school throughout her life, graduating from the University of Washington with a BA (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) in mathematics. While at the UW she met the love of her life, John Poulson. During her post graduation trip to Europe, John proposed and they were married in 1988. Laurie worked at home raising two beautiful girls, participating actively in their education and including them in her love of travel, including trips to Switzerland and England. When the girls were old enough to be less dependent, she went back to the UW and got a masters degree in linguistics and then was accepted into the PHD program in computational linguistics. She was a rising star in the field and attended conferences, sometimes presenting papers, in Oslo, Norway; Paris, France; Barcelona, Spain; Osaka, Japan and Prague, Czech Republic.

A very aggressive breast cancer forced her to stop her PHD pursuit just short of her dissertation. Laurie passed away May 18, 2012 as peacefully as possible in the company of family and close friends.

She is survived by her husband John Poulson, daughters Annie Poulson and Emily Poulson, mother, Jan Newman, father, Bruce Newman, and siblings Jean Newman, Robert Newman, Christy Newman, Seth Newman and Rachel Stewart.

The family would like to thank Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, specifically Dr. V K Ghadi and his team, for all their hard work during the two and a half year battle with cancer and the wonderful crew on the fifth floor infusion ward who made life as bearable as possible.
