Alice Thelma Dent McAdoo born 14 April 1916 on St. Simon's Island, GA, died 15 January 2013 in Seattle, Washington. Mrs. McAdoo, the youngest of three children born to Ernest Alton Dent and Josephine Green Dent, moved with her mother and brothers to Redlands, CA in 1918 following her father's death. She graduated from Redlands High School in 1934 and from the Glendale Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing in Glendale, CA. in 1939. She received her Registered Nurse (RN) certificate from the State of California in 1940. After marrying Benjamin F. McAdoo, Jr. in 1942, she settled with him in Seattle, WA in 1945, While Mrs. McAdoo spent most of her life as a homemaker, she kept her RN license active and worked in hospitals in California, Tennessee, Washington, D.C. and at Overlake Hospital in the Seattle area. Mrs. McAdoo supported the social and civil rights activities of Seattle's black community both during and after her husband's tenure as president of the Seattle chapter of the NAACP. She worked for the Medina Children's Home, the League of Women Voters, the March of Dimes, the Friends of Youth Home and the Seattle Symphony. Mrs. McAdoo enjoyed music, sewing, gardening and travel She is survived by her daughters, Marcia McAdoo Greenlee and Enid E. McAdoo; her son, Benjamin F. McAdoo, III; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and three sisters-in-law.
