Mary Belle (Becker) (Ashenfelter) Arthur Obituary
Mary Belle (Becker, Ashenfelter) Arthur

Mary Belle (Becker, Ashenfelter) Arthur, age 85, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013. She was born on September 7, 1927, in Seattle, Washington, to Ann Janet and Fred Charles Becker. Mary Belle grew up in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School. After high school Mary Belle attended the University of Washington where she studied literature. While at the University she met her first husband, Pete Ashenfelter. Together they raised five children in Bellevue.

Mary Belle was an artist in many mediums. She loved collecting from nature and incorporating those items in varied creations. She was a master knitter and seamstress. In her later years she took up basketry and created pine-needle baskets of intricate design and shape.

Mary Belle held an intense curiosity about the world. She loved to travel and was fortunate to live in Germany, Japan, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C. Mary Belle had a particular interest in folk art, which she collected during her travels to Europe, Asia, and throughout the United States.

Most of all, she loved to come home to Puget Sound and her ancestral grounds of Bainbridge Island, where she had spent summers as a child. Held close to her heart, always, was her clan, the Munro's.

She is survived by her five children - Peter Ashenfelter of Seattle, Ann Ashenfelter of Taos, New Mexico, Katherine Parish of Seattle, Martha Ashenfelter of Port Townsend, and Molly Ashenfelter of Encinitas, California, and by six grand children.
