Patrick "P.J." CALLAHAN

2/7/1918 ~ 3/28/2013

Patrick "P.J." Callahan died on Holy Thursday, March 28 at age 94 after a long and grace filled life. Son of Claude & Katherine Callahan, P.J. was raised on Seattle's First Hill just a few blocks from his final home at Fred Lind Manor. He attended O'Dea and St. Martin's High School. He was a member of the Esquires, a social group of young men at the time. He and Martha Schulte were prize winning ballroom dancers and were married August 9, 1942. In August 1944 P.J. enlisted in the Marine Corps serving as a Drill Instructor and in combat aboard the battleship Iowa during the Pacific Campaign and at the surrender in Tokyo harbor. He then resumed his job at the phone company serving 37 years in plant and marketing.

P.J. and Martha raised 3 children on Capitol Hill: Patrick (Julie); Claudia (Don Paulson); and Bob (Robin) and were proud grandparents of 9, including 5

Eagle Scouts. He was a devoted husband and father, especially in caring for Martha in her final years until her death in Sept., 2007. He was a devout, daily Mass Catholic. P.J's warm, caring spirit and Irish charm drew people of all ages to him. He was a "people person" in a remarkable way and an inspiration to many.

He is survived by his 3 children and grandsons Ryan, Connor, and Sean Callahan; Ashton, Reed and Grant Lyon; Jeffrey and Todd Bernave; and Anna Paulson.

Mass of Resurrection will be held Wed., April 3 at 11 AM St. Joseph's Church at 732 18th Ave. E on Capitol Hill with a reception following. Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice, 425 Pontius Ave. N. #300. Seattle, WA 98109.
