Helen Elizabeth Glindeman Rogers Obituary
Helen Elizabeth Glindeman Rogers

Helen passed away peacefully on June 12, 2013, at home in Concord, California, with one hand held by her son, Buck, and the other by Buck's partner of 27 years, Tom Redding.

Helen was born on July 10, 1920, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to parents Laura May Buchanan Glindeman and Henry Peter Glindeman, Sr. She was raised in Coeur d'Alene and graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID. During World War II she worked as a secretary for the U.S. Army in Seattle where she met and married (Feb. 12, 1944) her husband, Gail ("Rog") Virgil Rogers who was serving in the Army. After the war they moved to Rog's hometown of Gary, Indiana, where they raised two children, Marjorie Lucile ("Marlu") Rogers Jensen (deceased) and Bruce ("Buck") Douglas Rogers.

As soon as Helen's children were old enough to go to school she earned a teaching certificate and began teaching elementary school. She spent the next 36 years learning and teaching, earning a Master's degree from the University of Chicago and a Doctorate in Education from Indiana University. She taught at all levels: elementary, junior high, and high school in Gary, and college at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA. Helen didn't have many hobbies or outside interests: her passion was teaching kids to read, and later on at the college level teaching future teachers how to teach children to read. She never gave up on a student and felt strongly that every child had the ability to learn to read and that it was her job to find what approach would work for each child. She had no use for the now-common education establishment's constant debates of phonics vs. whole language. She would say, "Who cares? Stop debating and just sit down with the kid and try something until you find what works for that child."

Helen finished her teaching career in the Seattle area supervising student teachers in the classrooms to which they had been assigned. She loved it because she was back in the classroom with younger students. At this point Rog and Helen were living a quiet life in their condominium on Puget Sound. In 2005 she moved to San Francisco and in 2008 she moved with Buck and Tom to Concord, CA.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Rog, her daughter, Marlu, sisters Lucile Lange, Portia Morris, Olive ("Jean") Nolan, and brother William Glindeman.

She is survived by grandson William Scott Jensen (St. Helens, OR), granddaughter Laura Elizabeth Jensen (Kent, WA), son-in-law William Jensen (Renton, WA), brother Rear Admiral Henry P. Glindeman, Jr. (USN Retired) (Melbourne, FL), son Buck, and Buck's partner Tom Redding.

No services are planned-Helen would say "Oh, light a candle if you must, and then go about living your life." And so we shall. It was an honor for Buck and Tom to have shared these last seven years with Helen.

If you would like to make a donation in Helen's memory, she would want it to go to a .
