John Alexander CAREY

John Alexander Carey passed away June 30, 2013 at the age of 90. He was born March 11, 1923 to parents Brookie Jane Lloyd and John Levi Carey. From a very young age he had a passion for sailing and was active in Sea Scouts. Later, joining the U.S. Navy he became a fighter pilot flying Corsair planes from the carrier Midway. After several years of active duty he made many lifelong friends and remained in the Navy Reserves until retiring at the rank of Commander.

On his return from active duty he attended the University of Washington where he met the love of his life Joy Ann Holberg. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. After graduation with a degree in Accounting he began a successful career with Prudential Insurance that lasted 30 years. Later he worked for Compensation Systems operated by Seattle Mass Mutual until well into his 80's.

John and Joy enjoyed sailing their boat christened "JOY". They joined the Seattle Yacht Club and had many years of enjoyment sailing to reciprocal clubs and out stations with their children and grandchildren.

John was a devoted husband and beloved father who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Joy, daughters Julie Lawrence (Joseph) and Jan Horman (Steve) and son Jay Carey (Peggy). He was adored by his grandchildren Jeffrey, Jenny, Jamie, John, Kevin, Marie, Kelly and Ashley and two great grandchildren Madeline and Kenley. John will be remembered for his kind spirit, devotion to his family and his country, and good sense of humor.

The family plans private graveside services. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be sent to the USS Midway Museum.
