Shawn J. Mintek

Passed away at home September 23, 2013 at age 64. Despite aggressive prostate cancer, Shawn continued to teach Senior Humanities and Math at Franklin High School until spring this year. Raised in the Chicago area, he moved to Seattle in 1972 for graduate study at the University of Washington where he earned a doctorate in philosophy. A person of great integrity, with a gently irreverent sense of humor and a flair for performance, his roles were various: devoted husband and father; gifted, dedicated teacher; scholar, philosopher, mathematician; baseball player, fan, umpire; ship-scaler, shop steward; avid paleontologist, bird lover; punster, poet, lover of sonnets and haiku; movie buff, Deadhead, devotee of unusual and exotic music; vegetarian, pacifist, recovered alcoholic; critical thinker, iconoclast, curmudgeon; and so much more.

Survived by his dear wife Liz and son Leo; parents Victor and Evelyn Mintek; siblings Mara Moreland (Randy), Rian Mintek (Paula), Lori Broccolo (Dan), Jody Quinn; cousin Ann Kruzel (Herb); brother-in-law Anthony Ungar (Rose Ann); and many nieces and nephews. Survived also by his 'Philosophers on Holiday' study group and hundreds of the Franklin students and alumni he taught since 1986. A memorial will be held Saturday, November 30, 3-5pm at Franklin High School. Donations in Shawn's memory may be made to Franklin High School, 3013 S Mt Baker Blvd, Seattle, WA 98144.
