Frederick Nollan Obituary

Frederick L. Nollan

Born October 16, 1929 in Long Beach, California to Ruth and Fred Nollan. Died November 2, 2013 in Seattle, Washington. Fred graduated from Lincoln High School and the University of Washington where he was a member of ATO and where he met Sally, the love of his life, and wife of 62 years. After college Fred went to work for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company where he spent his entire working life. But, what Fred was really devoted to was his family. Whether a family camping trip to his favorite beach at the ocean, skiing in the Cascades, or his attendance at countless of his children's and grandchildren's football, baseball, basketball, and soccer games, for Fred, family always came first. Fred was a passionate gardener. First, in his garden at his home on Queen Anne and then as a member of the Interbay P-Patch for 21 years, Fred spent many happy hours nurturing the soil and his beloved corn, tomatoes, and raspberries. In his 60's Fred took up cycling and, along with his wife Sally, cycled in Ireland, Austria, North Carolina, and Vermont. Fred was also an avid runner, participating in over 20 St. Patrick's Day Dashes up to the age of 77.

Fred is survived by his wife, Sally; his two daughters, Susan Schillios, and Katie Sechler, and three sons, Fred, Michael, and Kenneth, and his brother, Bob Nollan, as well as twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. However, because of his kind and generous spirit and obvious zest for life, Fred will also be remembered by the many others, both young and old, whose lives he touched and who are all better for it. We will miss him as long as we live. Family services pending. Memorial donations may be made to Greyhound Pets of America, 9503 127th Pl. S.E., Renton, WA 98056.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Mr. Nollan :-)
Your picture here is exactly the way I will always remember you. I was somewhere around 11 - 15 when I would come to your house and play with whoever was around -- mostly with Susan and my sister Erika. Everyone was so happy when you got home from work and you were boisterous, jokey and always nice -- in a loud way! Somehow you would manage to kick us out so you all could have dinner and you always did it in a way that didn't feel like getting kicked out! At your house I never felt like I was in the way, so I never felt kicked out either I guess.

Through you and Mrs. Nollan, I was introduced to an unfamiliar world. A place of acceptance, humor, no big dramatic scenes, fun, love, kindness and more. Not that you didn't blow your top -- you did that honestly and without blaming other people. I'd never seen the likes of that kind of clean top-blowing either. I knew it was fair and authentic because it wasn't scary.

The legendary Nollan magnetism was irresistible. I can verbalize now what it was you and Mrs. Nollan gave me, just by being you. Your gift was 100% free and it has lasted me through my lifetime. The gift came consistently during those awkward transition years when I was, shall we say, a little rebellious. I never seemed to faze either of you. You just kept accepting me for my best self. The good me. All the acts that I would push and test. You weren't worried or annoyed or judgmental. After all, it was only me. You treated me with respect and understanding despite my childish teenage shenanigans. (And I'm pretty sure that's how you treated, dare I say, everyone.) And if you thought I was ok then I guess I was.

Over the years you and Mrs. Nollan are no longer in First Place as my example of a loving marriage, loving parents and exposing me to how it be. With a few notable exceptions, for me it has turned out you are in Place.

I can speak for Mike Banks who never actually said anything as direct as I've written here. But I know for sure that he learned exactly what I learned from you. You were, for him, so completely unfamiliar and completely irresistible. We longed to be around this impossible stability and fearless love. He knew he was special to you. And in his singular Banks way, he would brag about you to me. But this time I knew he wasn't making it up or exaggerating.

Ah, the stories and memories keep coming but I'd better close now.

Thank you Mr. Nollan for being exactly what the world needs now and needed them. Love! sweet love :-)

And Sally, I hope you know how much I love you as I always have. Thank you for being my grownup parent-friend when I was 14. Thank you for being a loyal friend to my mom -- she loved you more than you may know. She really really did. Maybe you do know but I want to be sure.

I think of you often and DO give me a call if you feel like it. I would so welcome hearing your girlish lilting voice -- you sound like a teenage girl, as you always did.

XOXO!
Katie A.

I just discovered that Fred passed away late last year. He was such a great person! I purchased insurance from him over 30 years ago but had spoken with him on occasion throughout the years. I loved his infectious smile and sense of humor and believe it or not I can still hear his voice. (His brother was a teacher of mine in the Bellevue School district as well.)
My heart goes out to you and your family Sally. He was one of the good ones!

Sally,
Fran and I are in California and just heard the news of Fred's passing. When one reaches the age 80 plus years, death shouldn't be a surprise---but it is.
Fred was my Reservist buddy, good friend, insurance agent and Prospect Street neighbor.
Every time we have meatloaf for dinner, I think of you and Fred---my fellow meatloaf lovers. Remember?
Sally, we send our sincere sympathy to you, your terrific kids and brther Bob.
Fondly, George and Frances Barnecu

Fred Nollan-a man of integrity and comfort. To Sally and entire Family, Kasey I send our condolences. A benchmark on Queen Anne, Great Family to all the kids who shared the opportunity to enter their Prospect house-- The door was always open where you were greeted with Fred's Big Smile "How Ya Doin". I was one of those Lucky Kids growing up with Mike, who had the pleasure to know Fred and the Nollan Family.
With Celebration and Gratitude,
Sam and Kasey Brace

Dear Sally and Family, I was saddened to read yesterday of Fred's passing and wish to send heartfelt sympathy to each of you. The Ardissono family had many great times with you all at ULC and on the ski slopes; my brothers, Bob and Bill, have especially good memories of skiing with Fred, Jr. and Michael. Fred was also, as I recall, a person who could be counted on to be of service on projects at the church along with several other good men who were members at the time. It was so thoughtful of you, Sally, and Fred to attend our Mom's memorial service 2 years ago. Seeing your smiling faces was such a comfort and reminded us of the friendship and support that our families enjoyed; we were very touched by your presence there. Fred was a truly good man, a loving husband and father and a person who was an excellent role model for my generation.
Please take good care of yourselves; I am holding you close to my heart. Warmly, Ruth Ardissono Hertz

Your good friends at the Interbay P Patch will miss you so much. You and Sally meant so much to so many. Stan and I admired your humor and your devotion to your family. Your soda bread, raspberry rhubarb cobbler and carrot parsnip soup--yum.

Anne joins me in our condolences to Sally and the family in Fred's loss. Fred, along with Sally and their children were cheerful, friendly neighors for many years before they moved from our Queen Anne neighborhood. Fred was also, with me, an alumnus (but he was of a somewhat earlier year) of Seattle's Lincoln High School and very active in the Lincoln Lynx Alumni Association. Fred will be much missed, not only by his family and friends, but also by his community.

I was very sorry to read of Fred's passing. I worked with him at Connecticut Mutual in the 1980s and he was our family's insurance agent for decades after that. He was truly a good man in all aspects of life. My condolences to the family.
