Thomas W. Thies Obituary
Thomas W. Thies

With his wife of 47 years by his side, Thomas W. Thies passed away on Sunday, March 16th from complications following a stroke.

Tom was born on February 20, 1931 and grew up in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle. He attended Franklin High School and the University of Washington, where he was a four-year member of the Husky crew team while also serving in the Air Force ROTC program. While at UW, he was a member of the fraternity Phi Delta Theta, where he developed close relationships that have lasted over 60 years. He graduated from UW in 1954 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.

Following college, Tom served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1957 as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the RF-84F aircraft, primarily in Moses Lake, WA. After completing his military service, he worked in sales for Clark Equipment, a job which took him to Europe for several years and through the Midwest, where he and his wife, Marilyn Manion Thies, met through mutual friends. A few years after returning stateside, he moved into institutional sales in the financial services industry with firms such as Laird, Blyth Eastman Dillon, First Boston, Raymond James and Hanifen Imhoff.

Tom was devoted to his family and friends and had a genuine interest in the lives of those he loved. He had a lively spirit and loved to energetically engage with everyone he encountered. He read widely, often multiple books at a time using his ubiquitous note cards as bookmarks, and had a great appreciation for all types of music, from classical to country. Tom took a vigorous interest in politics and world affairs and was keenly interested and active in the Naval War College. Even into his eighties, he was an avid tennis player. Once in retirement, Tom indulged in his lifelong love of travel. He relished an adventure, traveling wherever the road took him, whether it was a cruise with friends around the San Juan Islands, a four week solo meander through Alaska, renting his favorite beach front house on St. George Island, FL each spring, or cruising much of the northern hemisphere on his beloved Windstar "Windsurf;" he wanted to be able to see and do it all.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marjorie Wilson Thies, and sister Joanne Torrance. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, sister Mary Moss, son Charles Thies (Lisa), daughter Virginia Spicka (Jim), and three grandchildren: Anderson and Annika Thies, and Paige Spicka.

A memorial service will be held from 1-4 pm on Saturday, April 26th at the Nassau Inn, in Princeton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Washington Crew Team, care of University of Washington Athletics, Crew Memorial, Tyee Office, Box 354070, Seattle, WA 98195. Another memorial in Seattle will take place in late summer 2014.
