Judith Joki Obituary

Judith Joki (Screws)

Judi passed away unexpectedly on May 17th, 2014. She was born on July 1, 1943 to Commander Frank Screws and Edna Bazemore Screws.

She was a proud Navy brat who was fortunate to have lived in several different states, of which Hawaii was her favorite.

Judi graduated from Oak Harbor High and attended Western Washington University. She then moved to Seattle, where she began her favorite job as secretary and head of camp-development fund raising for the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

During a summer camp visit at Camp Omache, she met the love of her life, Eagle Scout and Aquatics Director, James (Jim) A Joki. They were married in 1965 and spent their honeymoon driving to Texas in their 1965 Ford Mustang where Jim began his job working for NASA to put a man on the moon. While in Texas, they had their three children, James, Jennifer, and Jacqueline.

In 1975 Judi and her family moved to Kansas. There Jim completed medical school and residency. In 1979 the family returned to Seattle. Judi was then able to fulfill her dream of returning to college to study geology and participate in geological digs.

Judi was happiest with a house full of kids. It didn't matter if they were her own, family, friends' or neighbors'. She loved being with family, and her grandchildren were a special joy to her. She also treasured time spent traveling and camping with her husband in their RV.

Judi was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Trojan, and father- and mother-in-law Ole and Beryl Joki. She is survived by her loving husband James A. Joki and children James Massond Joki, his daughter Brittany and her husband, Spencer; Jennifer Christine Joki and her sons Declan and Nolan and their father, Christopher Scott; Jacqueline Rene Daane and her husband Scott and their children, Jacob, Victoria, and Sebastian; her sisters and their husbands, Valera and Sandy Wilson and India and Jim Manwaring; and her sister-in-law and husband, Judy and Alan Hutchison. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, "outlaws," and friends, as well as extended family in Georgia.

A memorial will be held Saturday, May 24th, at 12:00pm at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach, 18354 8th Ave NW, Shoreline, WA 98177. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Judi's favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Hallwyl Castle by Judy Joki

Judy Joki lives on in our hearts, every time we look at her beautiful painting of Hallwyl Castle, Canton Aargau, Switzerland. Our mother Althea knew Judy from Ronald Church, and commissioned the painting sometime in the mid 1970's as a gift for our Swiss father, Fritz. Judy's masterpiece has adorned our living room as long as I can remember. Mom has already left for Heaven, and Dad is about to go too. He rests even now in bed, underneath his beloved painting of Switzerland that Judy created so many years ago. God bless you Judy, and thank you for your gift.

I was a patient of yours 17 years ago. I still remember how happy you where when your wife came up. I am so very sorry for your loss. I know I am late but I am praying for you and your family.

September 25, 2015

Dear Dr. Joki and family, I was so heartbroken to hear of your loss. I was a patient of yours and I remember you talking about your wife with such love and fondness. You spoke about how she had to take you on cruises so that you would actually leave work behind! It is so difficult to lose the matriarch of your family and I hope you know how many people care about you and your family. Much love, Erik, Elissa, and Aidan Casey.

I can already see Aunt Judi coming into the kitchen during our summer visits, giving me a big hug, drinking a coffee with me as we catch up during our summers home. It just will not be the same without her there, and we are shocked and saddened to hear of her passing.

There will be so many little things - the fragrance of the pikake flower that she loved, memories of life in the South that we shared - that will continue to remind me of her. Dale and I, along with Alex and Theo (whom we wish that Aunt Judi could have met), will cherish the memories we have of you, and I feel so fortunate to have been able to be part of your family.

Sending love from the Philippines.
