Rose Harrell Obituary

Rose Tamaye Harrell

Rose Harrell was born July 17, 1933, in Seattle, Washington, to John Masura Kobata and Tameno Kobata. She passed away from heart failure during the evening of October 11, 2014. She was 81. Rose attended Bailey Gatzert Elementary School until the government interned her family to the Minidoka Internment Camp during WW II. Her mother, Tameno, had 6 children with her first husband and after his death, 5 more children with Rose's father. Little Rose was the youngest girl of all 11 children. Her father was a florist, thus the name Rose. After returning from Internment Camp, she finished elementary school, Washington Junior High, and Garfield High School where she met Clayton Harrell Sr., her husband of 50 years. They were sophomores. They graduated in 1951 and were married in 1953 and remained married until Clayton's death in 2003. She was a devoted wife and mother. They had two sons, Clayton Jr. and Bruce Harrell. Both of Rose's sons, Clayton Jr. and Bruce and her nephew Keith attended Garfield where they were all standout athletes and scholars. Rose played basketball at Garfield, too. Her love of sports drove her to never miss a UW Husky game, Mariners game, or Seahawks game. Rose worked as a secretary at the East Madison YMCA, the FACTS newspaper, the Model Cities program, as a business manager under Walter Hundley, and she was also promoted to Finance Manager at the Seattle Public Library where she retired in 1993. While working for the City of Seattle, she was elected to the Board of Directors for the Seattle Credit Union for 15 years. After retirement, she spent time with her pride and joy - her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Clayton Sr., son Clayton Jr., and nephew Keith Harrell. She is survived by her son Bruce Harrell (Joanne Harrell), brother-in-law Wendell Harrell (Florence Harrell), Brother Jack Habu (Fumi), Sister Louise Sakuma (Jim Akizuki), several nieces and nephews including Toni Harrell, Michelle Harrell, Victoria Rogers, Linda Ishii, Nancy Ishii, Marjorie Mar, Robert Ishii, Gayle Sordetto, Stephanie Ojima, Jennifer Habu (Richard), Gordon Habu, Art Habu, and her grandchildren Monisha Harrell, Tia Isabell, Jason Lombard, Evan Harrell, Adam Harrell, Joyce Harrell and Clayton Harrell, III. A Memorial Service will be held for Rose on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at First AME Church located at 1522 14th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122.

We were living in Greece at the time of Rose's death, which is why this remembrance is so late. She was extremely helpful as I started my career as an Administrative Assistant/Secretary.

Bruce,

Sorry to hear about the passing of your mom. I'll always remember her at our baseball games cheering us all on. Even after you moved away to the UW campus to attend school and play football, your mom still had myself and other teammates over to your house for dinners. And man she could cook. Your mom was special. Thanks for sharing her with the rest of your friends and teammates. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Dear Bruce, know that the McKinney family is holding your family in prayer. Losing one's mother is akin to permanently being off balance because the world will never right itself again. It's an incredibly hard adjustment to make, moving through life now a little off kilter. Mothers have a way of making the crooked places straight. What I can share with you from my heart, having lost my beloved mommy just two years ago, is that the pain doesn't cease but you learn to manage differently for a mother's love you never outgrow. Brighter days will rise. Her love for you remains unshakable and unmoved. Wash yourself in that knowledge when days get tough. Know that we stand with you and yours and we will continue to love you through this challenging time.

Bruce - who could have known that the last time we saw each other, just a few weeks ago, you and I reminisced about growing up in the CD, our families and specifically how I remembered TT Minor elementary school days and hoping to be in Clayton's class because your Mom would bring cupcakes for the whole class each holiday and his birthday! When we talked just a few weeks ago, you said she was well and now she's gone. I feel it seems the world stops when a Mother passes. And if you listen closely you'll hear a voice again. She's with your Dad, brother and cousin and all the other relatives and friends are together - watching over you and your family. And I know you will be fine and not alone, I met your lovely wife. Ed, Ricky, Mom and I send our condolences to you and your family.
