Robert Dale Obituary

Robert C. Dale

Robert "RC" Dale, UW French & Film Professor 1962-1990, died 11/6/2014, age 78, at Vashon Community Care. Bob started programming films at age 7 for the Wisconsin YMCA; in college he co-founded Wisconsin Film Society and, arriving in Seattle in 1962, by 1970 started UW's Film Series and co-founded Seattle Film Society, Seattle's first entity to exhibit old & foreign films. Through these films and their notes and articles, Bob and his fellow cineastes turned Seattle into "the best film city in the country outside New York." Bob also hosted The Brews Brothers, a monthly home-brewed beer club; many members later joined the NW artisan beer scene. He met his second wife Karen during a shoot; in 1990 they moved to Yachats, Oregon, where they helped establish a community center. Bob wrote a weekly "Commons Calendar" and a monthly column on Hypercard programming for the Corvallis Mac User Group. They moved to Vashon Island in 1995. Bob volunteered weekly at the Vashon's Food Bank, cooked monthly for Vashon's Homeless Dinners, and yearly auctioned off bread classes & catering for the local care center. To friends and community, he gave his very best. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Arden, WSJ financial columnist, and brother Scott Dale. He is survived by wife Karen, daughter Laura Dale, grandson Malcolm, and siblings Judy & Tom. Memorial donations can be made to Vashon Community Care Foundation or for the Homeless Dinners sponsored by IFCHvashon.org.
