Harriet Shank, long time member of The Seattle Symphony cello section, passed away peacefully in Minneapolis on May 3, 2015. She and her husband Bill, who passed away in 2013, moved to Minneapolis to be near their daughter, Leslie, former member of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Her son, Geoffrey, was a talented cellist who died in 1994, in a car accident in Spain, where he was a member of the Orchestra in Granada.

Born in Oakland, California, in 1927, Harriet was the second generation of a musical family. Her mother taught piano in their home, and her father was an amateur cellist as well as an engineer for Matson. She attended Mills College, at the age of 16, and a couple of years later went to Radcliff to finish her studies. She received a Masters in Music at University of Texas, Austin. Included in her professional accomplishments were Principal Cello of the Honolulu Symphony and section cello in The Seattle Symphony, for 28 years. After she retired at the age of 65, she continued to perform chamber music with The Ladies Musical Club, in Seattle.

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Leslie, son - in -law, Joseph Hagedorn, granddaughter, Lulu Hagedorn, brother, Lester Westling II, nieces Karla Bakke, Karen Jerome, and nephew, Lester Westling III.

There will be a memorial service in late August/ early September, in Seattle at The University Congregational Church, where Bill and Harriet were members.
