1924 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Nancy Anne Pleas

March 17, 1924 ~ October 30, 2016

Nancy Anne Pleas passed quietly from this life at 5:45 AM

on October 30, 2016. She was surrounded by her family, which now totals 100. She had a wonderful life of 92 plus years, but we all know she is happiest back with her husband Riley, who she has missed dearly and daily for the last 7 years.

Nancy was born to Ruth and Roy Seay Sr. on March 17, 1924 in Clarksville Tennessee. Her family moved to Troy Ohio in 1928, where Nancy graduated from Troy High School at age 17.

Nancy attended Christ Hospital College of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1945 (now called Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences). Nancy was the top student and was selected to receive the Elizabeth Gamble Deaconess Home Association Scholarship (Proctor and Gamble) to cover her nursing school tuition. Nancy transferred as a US Navy Cadet nurse to University of Michigan, where she met her husband Riley William Pleas. While at the University of Michigan, Nancy received her orders from the US Government to start work at St. Alban's Navy Hospital in Long Island, NY to treat injured soldiers from the war. After serving at St. Alban's, Nancy returned to Christ Hospital College and received her degree as a Registered Nurse and earned a Public Health Nursing Certificate. Nurses who had earned their RN degree were awarded a black stripe at graduation to place on their nurse's cap, which was a proud part of her uniform.

Riley and Nancy married on September 14, 1946 in Ann Arbor. They moved to Seattle in 1947. In 1950 Riley and Nancy were raising their family and started Riley Pleas Inc, a general construction company. Nancy kept the books in their home office.

In 1953 when Children's Hospital needed nurses to help move patients and equipment from Queen Anne Hill to the site in Laurelhurst, Nancy volunteered to help. She was a longtime member of the Florence Ewing Guild.

Nancy was also a Seaport Steel Board member emeritus.

Nancy and Riley built a home in Hawaii in 1977. After Riley's passing in 2008, Nancy continued to spend 6 months at a time on the Big Island, with a constant flow of family members throughout the months.

Nancy made it a priority to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grand-children. She never forgot any of their birthdays, including their spouses.

Family summers were spent on Whidbey, where Nancy, who never held a driver's license, was dropped off with all the children for a summer loaded with wonderful memories and lots of cooking!

Nancy is survived by her 7 children, Terry James (Buzz), Colleen Raymond, Kelly (Cheryl) Pleas, Maureen Brotherton (Joe), Ryan (Pam), K.C. (Shonagh), Molly McCullough (James), as well as 29 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren with 3 more on the way. Nancy is survived by her brother Bill, preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Roy Seay Sr. as well as brothers, Roy Jr. and Horace Seay.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 4900 NE 50th St., Seattle at 1:00 PM on Monday November 7th. Reception to follow.

Remembrances can be made to Teens In Public Service, 2900 NE Blakeley St. Suite B. Seattle, WA 98105 or the Nancy Pleas Scholarship at the Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences, 2139 Auburn Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45219
