John McEachern Obituary

John Alexander McEachern

"Scotty" McEachern

"Scotty" McEachern passed away peacefully Sunday, December 11, 2016 after battling a long illness with Parkinsons.

Born in Portland in 1938 to Flavia Bracken McEachern and Alexander B. McEachern, Scotty attended Lakeside and Roosevelt High Schools, Menlo College, and graduated from the University of Washington.

During the Second World War, Scotty's family lived in Eastmoreland, a suburb of Portland, and his father and grandfather (Founder of the General Construction Company) built the system of shipways at Swan Island and other locations on which Henry J. Kaiser built vast numbers of Liberty Ships for the War effort. Scotty and his sisters attended many such ship launchings where their grandmother, aunts and older cousin launched and christened several of these important vessels.

After Scotty's father Alex's untimely death in a small plane crash in 1959, he was thrust into a leadership role at the General Construction Co. at the young age of 21 and eventually transferred control of the Company to other family members. Scotty himself founded and operated a sprinkler contracting concern for many years and also had other business interests.

He was interested in economics and commerce and served as an active and knowledgeable member on the Board of Northwest Hospital for many years. Local and national politics were also a lifelong and keen interest of his. Scotty was a member of the Washington Institute and was acknowledged by them with various recognition awards.

In addition, Scotty was a longtime and well known member of Seattle Golf Club and an avid and extremely talented golfer. A participant and winner of many tournaments, golf was a great and enduring passion of his.

By his first wife Karen a daughter Megan was born in 1972. In 1979 Scotty married Nancy Harrold and their son Shawn was born in 1981.

In addition to his two children he is survived by sisters Elizabeth McEachern Miller and Marsha Morrison and many nieces and nephews on his side as well as that of his wife Nancy.

Scotty was a good friend, devoted husband, loving brother, popular social partner and strong church-goer. His wit and friendship will be missed by us all.

A memorial service will be held Friday, December 23rd at 10:30 am at Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Seattle.
