Erika Bohm-Vitense Obituary
Erika Bohm-Vitense, 93, passed away January 21, 2017, in Seattle, WA. She was born June 3, 1923, in Curau, Germany, but has been a resident of this area for 49 years.
She was a professor of astronomy at the University of Washington from 1968 until 1993, and continued research at the university for 18 years thereafter. Erika was at the same time a dedicated mother, continuing as caregiver for her disabled daughter Eva past retirement. Having grown up in an artistic family in a farming community, she was also a hobby painter in youth, and loved needlework, gardening, and spending time outdoors with family in later life.
Erika Bohm-Vitense is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Hans-Juergen Boehm and Soroor Ebnesajjad of Palo Alto, CA, and Manfred Boehm of Mountlake Terrace, WA; two daughters, Helga Boehm of Snohomish, WA, and Eva Boehm of Seattle; two grandsons, Erich Boehm of San Jose, CA, and Arman Boehm of Mountain View, CA; two granddaughters, Lindsay Ward of Lynnwood, WA, and Ashley Hollenbeck of Mt. Vernon, WA.
Visitation will be on Friday, Feb 3 at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave. N, Seattle. Funeral Service will be held at Evergreen-Washelli, Seattle, on Saturday, February 4 at 10:00 am.

Erika has been the woman I wished to emulate, from the beginning of my astronomer life. I first met her in 1976 in Frascati, when she accompanied her husband Kark Heinz to the second workshop on white dwarfs, and, on our request, she gathered with us and answered our questions on convection at the blackboard. Then I met her only in the new century, in Seattle, where we had a long conversation in her room at the Institute, concerning the Böhm-Vitense gap on the main sequence, and I admired again her brain clarity and desire to continue learning new things. Please bring my condolence too to her family
