Dirk Kilgore Obituary

Dirk Marvin Kilgore

Dirk Marvin Kilgore of Bothell, Washington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 29, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 48. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. Dirk was the devoted husband of Kindra and father to Zoe and Logan. He is survived by his father, James M. Kilgore, Jr. of Vancouver, Washington, his brother Erik Kilgore of Portland, Oregon, and his sisters, Erin Churnin of Murchison, Texas, and Monica Morgan of Asheville, North Carolina.

Dirk was graduated from Roseburg High School in 1987 where he met the love of his life, Kindra. He attended the University of Washington where he received degrees in Architecture and Building Construction. Following graduation in 1991, he began work as a project manager for Wick Constructors in Seattle. He and Kindra were married in 1997. In 2003, he went back to school to get a masters degree in teaching from City University and embarked on his next adventure as a middle school teacher.

Dirk loved the challenges of teaching and taught science and math at Skyline Elementary School, Lake Stevens Middle School, and most recently at North Lake Middle School in Lake Stevens, Washington. He was beloved by his students and colleagues, who enjoyed his dynamic personality and easygoing nature. He lived in Bothell and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood, Washington.

Dirk had a great, though somewhat quirky, sense of humor and enjoyed ribbing his friends, his family and even his students. He was very creative and even had a collection of paper mche; monsters named for friends. He was devoted to his students, his friends, and his family and loved working on projects around the house, hiking with the kids, and playing with the family's three dogs, Scruffy, Delta, and Carrick, and tarantula, Jasmine.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th Street SW,

Lynnwood, WA 98036. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a GoFundMe account to purchase microscopes for the science department at North Lake Middle School.

Dirk Kilgore was my science teacher in 6th grade and I had the privilege to have him as my guide during the Marine Biology trip I took with him and a group of my peers in 7th grade. I'm not sure even how to describe it, but something about his presence as a teacher has stuck with me after all of these years. I am a sophomore in college now and I still think about how much he made an impact on my life and how great of a teacher he was. He is sorely missed and I know that he knows that. My condolences to his family. He was a treasure.

Dirk was a good person and a good teacher. Not many give up a corporate career to teach middle school. We miss him.

Dirk was a wonderful teacher and friend. We spent many hours enjoying our job and sharing the art of teaching. He made learning fun and compelling for everyone, which is not easy in middle school. I will miss his contagious smile, his laughter, unique teaching teaching style, and the man he was. May God bless your family in this time of sorrow and rejoice in the man who touched touched so many lives.

My daughter was lucky to have Mr. Kilgore as her first period science teacher two years ago. She was extremely nervous going to a new school and Mr. Kilgore personally spoke to her and let her know it was going to be okay. She said he made her laugh and would come home and tell me about all of the fun ways he would teach the lessons. He sparked a love of science in her and his classroom was a fun and safe place to be. My daughter and myself will forever be touched by his kindness. Our prayers go out to the Kilgore family. With love - Mrs. Butler

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! Dirk will always be a part of our NLMS family! I will miss coming to work everyday and seeing him( and hearing him rock to Miley Cyrus party in the USA)! We had so much in our 500 building and teaching science together! He will be missed by everyone that had the opportunity to pass through his classroom!
