Gene Paul (Jim) Sackett Obituary
Gene (Jim) Paul Sackett

Jim Sackett passed away on September 8, 2017, at the age of 80. He was an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington, spending 32 years as a faculty member in that department. He also served as Associate Director of the Human Development and Disability Center and was a core staff member of the Washington National Primate Research Center. Jim was an influential scholar who explored primate models of child development, a distinguished scientist and primatologist, and an active teacher and mentor.

Jim was born and grew up in Los Angeles, California, the oldest son of Al and Ruth Sackett. He graduated from Santa Monica City College and received his Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School. His work as a behavioral scientist in developmental and experimental psychology began at the University of Wisconsin, before coming to Washington.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; brother Ted and sister Joan; children Julia (Harkola), Douglas, and Kate; and three grandchildren Claire and Rosie Harkola and Ian Sackett. He will be deeply missed by them and his extended family, his professional colleagues, and his friends.

Although Jim retired from the University in 2002, he continued his research, scientific writings, and student mentoring until his death. He enjoyed travel, especially to foreign countries and on cruises, reading, cooking, watching football, and crossword puzzles.
