Arba "Sonny" Guy Abney, 85, died at University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia on Sunday, August 3, 2008. He was born in Sedalia, the son of Arba and Nettie (Chaney) Abney.

Sonny married Edna Kroeger on December 8, 1950, in Sedalia.

Sonny joined the Army in October, 1942. He served overseas for all but 21 days while in the service. He was honorably discharged in December, 1945, and was awarded 3 Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.

Sonny was a charter member and Deacon of the New Hope Baptist Church. He owned and operated a Shell service station for several years and was a truck driver for Missouri Pacific Freight Transport for 27 years. He retired in 1980. Sonny enjoyed family activities, especially with his children and grandchildren. Branson was a favorite travel destination, and he enjoyed the shows there. He was an avid woodworker and gardener. Sonny's spare time included fishing and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Edna, of the home; 3 sons, Andy Abney, of Smithton, Chris Abney, of Sedalia and Mark and wife, Lori, of Clinton; 9 grandchildren, Bryan, Michelle, Carrissa, Drew, Luke and Jesse Abney, Ryan Jennings, Cheyenne Blankenship and Jordan Rhodes; 4 great grandchildren, Jessica and Kalub Abney and Myles and Makayla Rhodes; and 3 sisters, Della May Wilborn, Virginia Downs and Judy Goff.
Sonny was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Jack Abney.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bruce Campbell and Rev. Ted Francis will officiate. Visitation will precede the funeral at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Green Ridge Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Ralph Thomas, Jack Smith, Elvis Durrill, Gary Goff, Marion Schmidt and Hugh Neill. Honorary Pallbearers are Ryan Jennings, Tim Riley, Luke Abney and Bryan Abney.

The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, to the New Hope Baptist Church Senior Adult Bible Class, in care of the funeral home.
