Gretchen Elaine Gillingham Baum, 88, died in Lincoln, Missouri, on October 23, 2010.
She was born on September 17, 1922, in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, the daughter of Vivian Gillingham and Crystal Endicott Gillingham. She grew up in Evanston, Illinois, where the family moved when she was a young child. On June 12, 1943, she was married to James Edward Baum of Keyesport, Illinois.
They farmed for several years in Illinois, then James began working in the industrial air conditioning and heating business, serving in management positions over a thirty-year career in Kansas City, Indianapolis, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City. During this time, Gretchen was the center of a busy household and also worked as a programming specialist for several radio and television stations, including KCMO in Kansas City. They retired in 1985 to the Lincoln, Missouri, area to be nearer to their grandchildren. They became active members of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln and were involved in many community activities. Gretchen taught children's Sunday School, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was always quick to volunteer whenever a need arose. James died last April. They had been happily married for sixty-six years.
Gretchen is survived by a son, Reed Baum of Breese, Illinois; two daughters and their husbands, Mike and Vicki Grove of Lincoln and Jim and Kathy Reynolds of Portland, Oregon; one grandson, Michael Grove of Bloomington, Indiana; one granddaughter and one great-grandchild, Jennifer Grove of Spencer, Indiana, and her son, Silvan Foster. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Judy Rubo. Two siblings survive her, Gifford Gillingham and Donna Feeley.
Services will be held at the Davis-Miller Funeral Home in Lincoln at 2:00 Wednesday with visitation at 1:00. She will be buried on Thursday beside James at McKendree Chapel Cemetery in Bond County, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lincoln.
