Maxine Madeline Wertz

SEDALIA — Maxine Madeline Wertz, 98, of Sedalia, died at Fair View Nursing Home on July 18, 2014. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she will be greatly missed. Maxine was born in Jamestown, KS on February 21, 1916 to Barbara and Cyrus Freeby. She grew up in Sabetha, KS and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1934. She married Walter Fred Wertz on October 28, 1936, and they honeymooned in Chicago. Maxine and Fred celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2011, with many family and friends at the Sedalia Country Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and eight other siblings: Fred, Floyd, Chet, Everett, Melinda Blazer, Doris Bolton, Edna Shannon, and Florence Christenson.

After living in California during World War II, where Fred worked for Douglas Aircraft, they moved to Sedalia in 1947. They opened Tally Ho Liquor Store along with Fred's sister, Louise and her husband Bill Ramsey. The business remains in the family known as State Fair Spirits. Maxine was an avid golfer having played at Elm Hills and Sedalia Country Club. She was also an avid bridge player, often winning many tournaments. She was a prolific reader and was known for her sharp wit. Maxine was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by her sons, Michael (Judy), of Belton, MO; Richard, of Sedalia; and Fred (Valerie), of Blaine, MN; ten grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Monday, September 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church with the Rev. Chad McMullin officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be offered online at
