Clyde Milton "Bud" Brownfield, age 88, of La Monte, MO, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1925, on a farm west of Sedalia, MO, the son of Cebe M. and Doris B. (Stark) Brownfield. He was raised on a farm south of Knob Noster, MO, and attended Brushy School and then Smith-Cotton High school.
Clyde served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, and had a tour of duty in Attu, Aleutian Islands, AK.
On December 27, 1945, he was married to Dorothy Jean Kesler at the home of her parents in Vancouver, Washington, while both the bride and groom were stationed at Yerba Buena Island, San Francisco. They returned to the Sedalia area in 1950 and farmed in the Bahner community. Clyde worked on road construction and at Whiteman Air Force Base, while the base housing was being built for Boeing during missile site construction. He worked for Lake City Army Ammo plant for nine years and for the Johnson County Highway Department for over 11 years, retiring in 1987 at the age of 62.
Horses and mules were a big part of his life and he particularly enjoyed taking young people for rides and participating in local parades behind his fine team of mules. Clyde was a member of the La Monte United Methodist Church where he was an usher for many years and on the Administrative Board. He served as Commander, American Legion Post #520, La Monte, and he was treasurer of the La Monte Senior Housing Board and served on the La Monte Cemetery Board. Clyde's other lifelong enjoyments included fishing, baseball, and traveling.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of the home, two daughters, Janice C. Hall of Warrensburg, Barbara I. Cooper and husband James of Independence, MO, one son, Gordon R. Brownfield and wife Liza of Arnold, MO, one sister, Mildred M. Eckles of Hughesville, MO, six grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 2, 2013, at the La Monte High School Gymnasium with Reverend Debbie Arvela and Pastor Alan Morse officiating. Pallbearers will be Floyd Hall, Masten Hall, Glenn Powell, Sean Celmer, Gordon R. Brownfield, Jr., and Carl Eckles. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Lane, Tim Ehlers, Jacob Eckles, Chris Gorrell, Abraham Eckles, and Zeb Eckles.
Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Highland Sacred Gardens in Sedalia with full military honors provided by La Monte American Legion Post #520.
The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at La Monte High School Gymnasium.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the La Monte United Methodist Church or La Monte American Legion Post #520 and both can be left in care of the Moore Funeral Home in La Monte, MO.
