Asa Irvin Overall, 92, of Shelbyville, passed away on March 4, 2014, at Crestview Center after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was born in Lawrenceburg, KY to Dr. Asa Caperton Overall and his wife, Maude Olivia Harris on Feb. 27, 1922. An Army
veteran of World War II
, he served his country as a medic on the Pacific Front. His lifelong interest in learning pushed him to continue on to college after completing military service. He graduated from the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture with a Bachelors in Science and a Masters in Ag Economics. His career path would eventually lead him to a position as a Farm Analysis Specialist in the Louisville area until his retirement at age 55. He was a member of the Shelbyville First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and the Shelby County Historical Society. He was an avid golfer who had shot a hole-in-one at the Shelbyville Country Club. He was also a die-hard University of Kentucky football fan and then a fan of University of Kentucky basketball. Shortly after graduation, Irvin moved to Georgetown, where he met his future wife, Mary Witherspoon Hambrick. The two married on August 15, 1950 in the Hambrick home. Shortly thereafter, the Overalls welcomed two children into the world, Sara Hambrick and Asa Irvin II. Irvin is preceded in death by his brother, John; and his sisters, Hazel and Joyce.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Sara and Asa; his sister, Linda Bell; and his grandchildren, Chad Presley Price, Olivia Eileen Overall, Asa Caperton Overall II, and Sara Elizabeth Price.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Thursday at the Shannon Funeral Home with Dr. Maurice Hollingsworth and the Rev. Gene Wright officiating. Visitation: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial: Georgetown Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy: Shelbyville First Baptist Church.
