Martha Jane Clark Embree

Martha Jane Clark Embree, 84, formerly of Shelbyville, died Monday, April 21, 2014 at Maple Manor Christian Home in Sellersburg, Ind., after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was the widow of James "Jim" Thomas Embree, whom she married on August 22, 1959 at the Ormsby Avenue Church of Christ. Martha was born on Oct. 3, 1929 in Dugger, Ind. to the late Julius Robert and Mildred Bernice Hoar Clark. She attended Portland Christian School in Louisville during her early years and was the valedictorian for the class of 1947. She received a Bachelor's Degree from Harding University in Searcy, AR and a Master's Degree in Home Economics from the University of Kentucky. She taught home economics at the Southeastern Christian College in Winchester prior to the school's closing. After her teaching days, she worked as an upholsterer and substitute teacher. She was a member of Fisherville Church of Christ in Fisherville and Sellersburg Church of Christ in Sellersburg, Ind. She was a wonderful mother, grandma, sister, aunt and friend, and she had a sweet disposition throughout life. She loved sewing professionally and recreationally, enjoyed playing the piano and Bible study. Through her maternal grandmother, Mary Olivet Standish Hoar, she was a descendant of Myles Standish, the famous Mayflower Pilgrim.
In addition to her husband and parents, a brother, Dr. Paul Clark, sister, Patricia Schreiner and daughter-in-law, Paula Embree, preceded her in death.
Survivors include four children, James R. Embree of Louisville, Joan (Sam) Marsh of Cynthiana, Teresa Marsh of Bagdad and Holly Embree (Paul) Anderson of Louisville; 11 grandchildren, Ben (Katie) Marsh, Clark (Michelle) Embree, Kayla Marsh, Lola (Luke) Embree Davidson, Adam Marsh, Peter Embree, Ginna Marsh, Kyle Marsh, Heather Anderson, Christopher Embree and Ian Anderson, three sisters-in-law, Barbara Clark of Milligan College, TN, Ida Kay Smith and Mary (Calvin) Tincher and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Webb Funeral Home with visitation 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday and after 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Interment will follow with her husband at Grove Hill Cemetery.
