Betty Ann Fawkes Hudson, 80, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, February 13, 2014 after a long illness. She was surrounded by her family when she died. Betty was born in Shelbyville, Ky. on July 11, 1933. She was the daughter and only child of Walter Lewis "Jack" Fawkes and Della Cunningham Fawkes. Betty graduated from Shelbyville High School. She attended Georgetown College where she graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. degree in English and a minor in French. At Georgetown, Betty was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. She had a Master's degree in English from the University of Kentucky. Betty taught high school English at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Durrett High School in Louisville and as a substitute teacher in the Jefferson County Public School system. Betty eventually retired from teaching to raise her children on a full-time basis. Betty was married to Harry Mastin Hudson in 1958 at Duncan Memorial Chapel in Crestwood, Kentucky. Betty was a member of Hurstbourne Baptist Church for over 25 years. Prior to joining Hurstbourne Baptist, Betty and Harry were longtime members of St. Matthews Baptist Church. Betty was an active member of her Sunday School class and enjoyed so much the friendships she and Harry developed through the class. Betty was a member of Hurstbourne Country Club. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and several beloved aunts and uncles. Betty is survived by her husband, her daughter Kathryn Hudson Welton (Jeffrey), her son Walter Bryan Hudson (Julie) and grandchildren Tyler Jeffrey Welton, Travis Ryan Welton, Toby Matthew Welton and Clara Hamilton Brown Hudson. She was a devoted wife to Harry for more than 55 years and an extraordinary mother who was selflessly dedicated to her children and ensuring their well-being at all times. Nothing gave her more joy than her four grandchildren. Betty's interests included reading, going to the movies, playing the piano and gardening at the family's farm in Henry County. Betty's family is greatly comforted by her strong Christian faith. As she wrote in her final days, "God is taking care of me. He always has." Funeral arrangements are being handled by Pearson Funeral Home at 149 Breckinridge Lane. Visitation will be at Pearson's on Monday, Feb. 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. at Hurstbourne Baptist Church at 8800 Shelbyville Road, followed by her burial at Grove Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, Kentucky. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
