Bobbye Jean Leonhardt McCarthy, 87, died Monday, July 14, 2014, in Shelbyville. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Shelbyville First Presbyterian Church where she had been active as a choir member and a pre-school Sunday School teacher for over 60 years. She was a 1944 graduate of the Louisville Girls High, a 1947 graduate from the University of Louisville with a B.S. degree in chemistry, and received a medical technology degree from St. Joseph's Infirmary in 1948. In 1952 she married William O. McCarthy. In 1959 the family moved to Shelbyville. She was a charter member of the Council for Retarded Children and Dorman Center. She also had served as the treasurer of the Dorman Center and had been a board member of the Kings Daughters Circle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Henry and Lillian Leonhardt; and her husband, William Ormsby McCarthy. She is survived by her sons, Michael Ormsby McCarthy of New Castle and Jeff McCarthy (Leslie) of Shelbyville; daughter, Kim McCarthy of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Jason McCarthy (Lydia) of Shelbyville and Brent McCarthy of Delray Beach, FL; brother, Larry Leonhardt of King George, VA; nephew, Randy Gramling of Shelbyville; other wonderful nieces and nephews; and all her loving caregivers at Crescent Place.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Shelbyville First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jay Hodge officiating. The family will receive guests from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday at the church and there will be a reception at the church following the memorial service.
