Bruce A. Gilman passed away from natural causes in Smyrna, GA, Tuesday, March 6, at the age of 93. Mr. Gilman was a native of Hymera, IN, born August 4, 1924, to the late Opha E. and E. Irene Gilman. He graduated from Hymera (IN) High School and held a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University. Mr. Gilman lived for many years in Shelbyville, KY, before moving to Smyrna, GA, five years ago. He moved from Indiana to California following his high school graduation and then moved back to Indiana after his marriage. Although Indiana was home, the family moved to Arizona, Wyoming, and California before moving to Kentucky in 1968. He grew to love Shelbyville and began to consider it his second home after Indiana. He served honorably as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a POW in Germany for 3 months prior to liberation in April 1945. He spent his entire career as an accountant and auditor with various transportation and defense organizations involved in construction, including Wabash Valley Asphalt, the U.S. Dept. of Defense, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (USDOT), and the KY Dept. of Transportation (KYDOT). He retired from the USDOT in 1979 and the KYDOT in 1989. After his second retirement, he was a partner to his wife in a successful fruitcake business that she started at age 65, selling up to 2000 each year through craft fairs and mail orders. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Tom and Laura Gilman, of Burlingame, CA, and Joe and Susan Gilman, of Smyrna, GA, as well as three granddaughters, Emily Gilman, Natalie Gilman Powell (Shane), and Hannah Gilman, and two great-grandsons. His wonderful wife of 72 years, Joy, preceded him in death on February 10, 2018, and their third son, Jack, in 1992. A funeral service will be held at Shannon's Funeral Home in Shelbyville, KY, on Saturday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. and interment following the service at Grove Hill Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to First Christian Church, Shelbyville, KY, or Sigma Nu Educational Foundation, Box 1869, Lexington, VA.
